Cross-slide vise
I'm after a cross-slide vise ie one that moves in X-Y directions for my drill press. This would theoretically allow me to drill holes precisely where I want them to go. I would be using it mainly to drill pen blanks accurately.
Carbatec and H & F sell them for about $80. I'm sure I've seen them around for cheaper than that. Not something I would use regularly but for those that have bought one, how useful and where did you get yours from?

Bought a "cheapie" from C'Tec about 5 years ago for about $65.00. I mounted it onto a plate of 10mm aluminium which allowed me to mount/dismount it easily on the drill press as I also have a table mounted to the DP.
If you are going to purchase one check that the 2 slides do in fact run at 90 degrees to each other for the full length of the adjustments - mine didn't and to get it right a mate of mine remilled the slides so that it is now good. I guess you get what you pay for especially in terms of accuracy with regards this sort of tool.
Hope it helps, regards,
Bob

Thanks, Bob, do they let you test these before you buy though?

Bought mine from H&F when they had it on sale last year, about $69 from memory.
Use it to drill pen blanks, makes it very easy to centre the drill on the blank.
Have posted some photos of it somewhere, I'll see if I can find them.
Definitely worth having.

I bought mine in Brisbane but I live 275km north - knowing what I know now - if I can't have a fiddle then no sale - it's a long way to go if it doesn't work properly. In all of the dealings I have had with C'tec over the years I have found them to be pretty good and in the main helpful.
Regards,
Bob

Fred,
I've seen your setup and it looks perfect for what I want to do which is to accurately drill pen blanks, particularly segmented type pens.
Bob, I'm gonna say that I live 300 km away and ask if I can have a play with the gear before I buy.
Regards,
Tiger

Tiger H&F's, Carba, Gasweld, Total Tools or similar are the only places I have seen them never seen them in any of the 6 Bunnings in around us.
