how to start, making, a ,trug
here are some pics of how you start making a trug, brief instuctions.
pic 1. from 2 pieces of pine, stick together with double sided sticky tape, the desired shape is then cut out so both sides are exactly the same. using a band saw or jigsaw.
pic 2. mark out the design in a sort of bric wall fashion, making sure to be exact.
pic 3. shade either side of the uprights for guidence, as this is where you will start . chisel down and towards the up right from both directions. being very careful not to pop them out. if they do all is not lost, glue them back in to place and leave for a while.
pic 4. this is a different one but the principal is the same. route the top front edge with what-ever shape you want. then on the back sides and bottom rebate with a router to allow for slats when assembling.
pic 5. one i'm doing out of mahogony at the momment

Thanks for this - looks like a project which could be a goer for a present for SWMBO!
Also, I like the idea of being able to do this work sitting on the lounge while watching the TV!Cheers

yes you should give it a try on some scap wood to start, all the noisey stuff is done outside in the shed, the carving it self i decided to do in doors as it makes no noise just a bit of mess on the carpet that can easly hoovered up afterwards. and its too cold in the shed

making handles for a trug
pic 1: rebate the bottom and sides 9mm depth.
pic 2: handles are cut then sanded to shape.
pic 3: tap round area to be removed wth chisel. then cut out most of it with a sraight router bit, do corners with chisel.
pic 4: nice snug fit.
pic 5: decided to cut a shape on edges for more detail. with router.
pic 6: drill holes 1/2 way through at top of handle for carry handle (a broom stick) that is fitted very last thing. slats for this im using 18 @ 165x15x9mm.
the carry handle and two of the slats i'm going to do a very simple but effective rope twist. pics of how to do this and the final assemby will hope fully follow in a few days.
so good luck to any one who wants to give it a try, hope iv'e explained it ok for you to follow.
