OK, it does not work for you. As Undi said, whatever floats your boat...
Anyway, thanks for the challenge, to make sure that I was not talking out of the inappropriate orifice I spent 10 minutes doing a freehand drawing and whittling experiment (on @#$% meranti, Wendy ) to satisfy myself that with a V tool it's quick and easy. Standard under and over carving, like for celtic knots etc.

Now, this is embarrassing!
No need to tell me that the carving is cr*p ... All I have done is to check the structure of real interwoven strips and see whether, as I had imagined, all the levels can be reproduced with V cuts, which they can. No pretence of order and symmetry, as I said I just held in my hands the piece of wood and the V tool and hacked away for a couple of minutes. Cross grain.

Well, you can't say I am not honest, can you? The point of those few scratches was not to prove that I am a good carver, was to prove to myself that the tool can do what I said. I just posted the photo to have a laugh with Wendy and show you that I did not cheat. You are a good carver, I am sure later on you will be able to show us how proficient you have become in the use of the V tool. .
Incidentally, making a mock up with wood strips also made me realise that your design is stylised, it is not meant to be realistic but is cut deeper to highlight the shadows. We learn something everyday, don't we?
