Default Tuning and setting up hand planes

    Hi Guys.

I started to "Fiddle"around with and old Carter hand plane yesterday.

I managed to sharpen the blade but realised that I had no idea what the hell I was doing after that !(I put the blade in upside down)

Anyway I got it cutting OK,but what I am after is some info on how to tune and repair them, sharpening angles and adjustments.

I have a small block plane and another smooting plane that I need to attend to.

I searched the net but didn't really come up with much.Any reccommended sites or books would be OK as well.

    Have a great day

    Greg

There's plenty of material here and out there Greg.

Try Google advanced search; enter Stanley plane, then in the 'one or more of' fields try tune, repair, fettle
    Cheers, Ern

    Hi Greg,

Great book by Sam Allen Just called Planes, Covers all sorts of Planes and sharpening techniques and usage tips. Pity you're not closer to the Gold Coast I run a one day Plane tuning and usage Workshop.

    Cheers

I see you are in Sydney, you may like to go to one of the Traditional Tool Group Sharpening and Plane Tuning workshops at Asquith - next one will be towards end of June.
As well, I have some Fettling tips on my website www.jimdavey-planes-sharpening.com
    Take care and Stay Sharp,

    Thanks for your replies,
I think I may have been using the wrong "word" in my search -I put in Fettle and got some answers!

    Jim,

I had a look around your site- and I will be having a look at the Traditional Tool Group workshops.

This is something that is dissapearing out of the tradies of today -what a shame!

    Cheers

    Greg
