Q-Turn at lake Summerset QLD
So who's going? It's next weekend
Been busy today packing tools, gluing up pen blanks, cutting turning blanks etc. I'll also be bringing plenty of my Banksia (only the smaller ones ), coffee and WW pen blanks for sale.
If all goes to plan, SWINO will also be bringing a heap of southern burls for sale Saturday
See you FridayNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Q-Turn is this weekend at Camp Somerset. I don't have much other detail at hand so will let others fill you in more.
I've just had it confirmed that I will get the pallet on Thursday at the latest so will be there on Saturday.
I will have Cream & Red Coolabah, Red & Brown Mallee, Yellow Box, Red Gum, Clock Slices and Pen blanks.
I will be bringing up a selection but please PM me if there is anything special that you are chasing.
Cheers,
Todd

Sorry, it's all sold out and i have closed the books for this year. should have just over fifty people and approx forty lathes. All the indications are for a top weekend. Jim

It's a hands-on get together of wood turners at the camp up at Summerset Dam (sorry I called it a lake). I've never been myself, but am told it is great, I missed it last year due to illness. It starts on Friday at lunch time and goes to Sunday afternoon.
Jim says it is full, so you will have to wait until next year for those of you who have missed out .
I'm heading up with Gawdelpus (John) with a very full trailer with every thing but the kitchen sink , sure as eggs I'll forget something essentialNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Some photos
Great weekend, 40 lathes and over 50 turners. I took my camera, but typical, didn't take any photos
Here's a few Gawdelpus took, photo shopped with Adobe to join the photos together, of the lathes set-up but no turners There were 2 levels of lathes, downstairs (some not shown).
and upstairs
the entrance to the shed (that shows both levels). There was also a kitch/display area on the left not shown.
then there was our set-up (John and myself) before the chips started to fly. I did bring more stuff then most , not knowing what it was going to be like
Most stayed in the main cabins up the hill where also breakfast/lunch/dinner were served. A few of us chose to camp near the shed to get an early start/late finish . I was the only one that stayed in a tent
Hopefully others will post more photos.

I really enjoyed the weekend at Camp somerset ,I took the opportunity to break from my normal Pen turning (still managed 13 though ) and step outside my comfort zone with a couple of small turnings ,so these are my first efforts away from pens , A pocket watch in Banksia and Battery Tea light in Camphor laurel .
Both sanded to 600 and finished with U-beaut glow, Cheers ~ JohnG'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

My turnings
So here is what I made:
First was the challenge piece, made from a PNG rosewood, the darker part is just black texta to add some colour. I was making an oyster box with finial and legs, but I cut the inside with square sides , so stopped after finial & box. 100dia x 100 high (incl finial)
Next was a small knob of Brown Mallee burl that someone was throwing out a while back, but the tree figure stood out for me, so wanted to make something out of it. I wanted it to have more of a dished shape, but there was only so much wood . It is 120x70 and 35 high

Next was Banksia and Pine Cone pendants, to show others what they turn out like, and a fancy Cigar with cast gold weave (a plastic product, not metal).
then my trinket box from Yellow Box burl and Conkerberry final & stand. I turned 3 finials before I got one to stay together , so it turned out a lot shorter than orginally planned. So I amde the stand also shorter to match. It was pretty late Sat night when I finished, and after 3 failures, I decided it was good enough. Just don't look too closely . 75dia x 150 high
I also started a pot pourii box with hand made lid, but that will have to wiat until another day to finish it.
