    Default Makita LS1016 vs LS1018

I知 a weekend woodworker and have been looking to get Makita SCMS for a while as I知 wearing out a friendship by constantly borrowing his!! Justifying the +/- $1,000 to my wife for a Makita LS1016 has been my only hesitation. I see that Makita have recently released a LS1018 that appears to have very similar specs to the LS1016, and it is being sold by most tool shops for around +/-$550

Can anyone tell me why the LS1018 is so much cheaper than the LS1016 or why I would choose one over the other besides price?

Spec's for each can be found at:
    LS1016: http://www.makita.com.au/products/po...saw?Prodid=150
LS1018: LS1018L-260mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw

    Suggestions and comments welcome

Makita seem to make two standards of saw for instance I am looking at buying a bench top saw they have a mlt100 which is $579 and one other which seems to have the same specs for $1024.Go figure

I reckon you'll find that the cheaper one is made in China and the more expensive one made in Japan. Yes, both made by Makita but in two different places, to differing standards.

They are both out of China.
Very few Makita tools are made in Japan these days.
The LS 1018 seems to have a cheaper build quality i.e. more plastic whereas the LS1016 has 4 sliding rails as opposed to 2 on the LS1018.

I have the older LS1013. The LS1016 looks like it has some improvements.
The webpage mentions "DXT (Deep eXact cutting Technology)" but doesn't
say what that is. Is this maybe part of the reason why there's 4 sliding
rails now? I.e., something to do with ensuring precision-depth cuts (which
the old LS1013 wasn't very good at)?

The LS1016 also has double sliding guards, greater mitre range, and a
more flexible vertical vise, or so it appears. The timber supports on the
LS1018 look rather narrow to me.

To the OP: a good quality SCMS is a tool you'll use for many, many
    things. I'm also a DIY'er and I started off with a cheaper $400 SCMS
some years ago, but eventually coughed up the $900 to buy my
Makita LS1013. I don't regret a single cent of the latter, although
it would have been much cheaper to skip the first step!
So cough up the extra money for the LS1016 -- it looks like a fine
versatile machine. Now that I've seen it, I'm wondering how
much I could get on eBay for my LS1013 so that I can upgrade to
    the LS1016.

    Hi All.

I suspect like many, I watch this forum a lot, but this was my first post and the response has been fantastic. Thank you very much for the great tips and assistance.

As suggested I will fork out the additional $$$'s to get the better quality, better made machine

Of interest, the guys at "Get Tools Direct" were great and this is what they told me when I posed the question to them: "If you are a tradesman do not buy the LS1018L because you will be disappointed. The LS1016 is much more accurate and the slide mechanism is of higher quality. The LS1018L is more for home uses and for apprentices to get them started."

    Many thanks

Well, I just had a look at an LS1016 and my guess above turns
out to be wrong. "DXT" is a contraction of "Deep Cutting Technology"
and "Exact Cutting Technology", but doesn't imply precision-depth cuts.

The depth stop on the LS1016 uses essentially the same concept
(a stopping screw) as the older LS1013 (though the fitting is different).
I guess I'll hang onto my LS1013 a while longer.
