I wouldn't be too worried about getting contrast between the face/figure and the trunk, their supposed to be one in the same aren't they? Anyway a very little bitumen paint or black/umber mixed with oil may give you the contrast your after. I can't help but think some burning would go well with the theme.

I'm thinking straight for the heart of the figure and around the frayed top. Then use a rotary brass wire wheel to fade the char off, then oil...just some thoughts only.

Well done Cliff!!
I like that very much, and i think Springwater is on the right track.
The face actually reminds me of an old Inuit. It must be the furry border around the face combined with the flat facial features.

Hey Cliffy, lookin good. How about throwing a cup of turps over it and taking a photo for us. I'm interested to see how he looks when/if the rest the timber is oiled.
Just read the Inuit thing, that was my exact thought to.

Next the overall oiling, tipped it up on it's side & sprayed the hollow.
Then stood it up on a pallet & sprayed a coat on the outside.Cliff.

Moved it a bit to stay in the sun & get some more breeze 'cos about a million stupid little insects decided that it 'smelled nice'.
Gave it a 2nd coat.
A couple of pics of the polished timber & the back of the log.Cliff.
