Default New Trailer build advice ?

    Hi all,
Been lurking in the background for a while and learning heaps.

Just about to start building a new replacement trailer for my small off road buggy & need some advice on the steel selection.

I want to build the trailer as light as possible, but strong.
Total weight it will carry is roughly 400 KGs, single axle, no brakes.
Frame will be 1700 wide X 2400 long with 3 middle cross sections,
plus drawbar. Trailer will have no side rails.

    Steel selection :
    Draw bar - standard 75 X 50 X 3

    Trailer chassis :
As mentioned, I want to go as light as possible, but strong.
And also want to try & use the cheaper steel sizes .

Options : I am thinking about 3 mm, or could I go to 2.5 ?
    50 X 50 X 3
    40 X 40 X 3
    30 X 30 X 3
    65 X 35 X 3

    The old rusted trailer was built out of 40 X 65 X 3 for frame and 75 X 50 X 3 drawbar
    and weighs roughly 300 Kgs.

Hoping to get total weight of new trailer down to around 260 kgs or less -maybe ?

    Any advice greatly appreciated

    Aussie

I would go 2.5mm down the sides in 50x50 and the rest 1.6.

    Have you downloaded google sketchup?

Its fun, witty and very good.

Plus, you can cut directly from the plan and it will be perfect!

    There are some sketchup plans in this build;

I cut straight off plan and its always 100%.

    cheers

I go along with Dazzlers steel sizing. RHS is pretty strong by design.

I will never be the person who has everything, not when someone keeps inventing so much cool new stuff to buy.

From an early age my father taught me to wear welding gloves . "Its not to protect your hands son, its to put out the fire when u set yourself alight".

OK, for me, the 2400 length is a fair overhang either end of a single axle for 2.5mm wall thickness of a 50x50 SHS rail. 75x50x2.5mm RHS maybe, but it would always be in the back of my mind whether the 2.5mm SHS is OK long term.

However, if you were to triangulate the frame by having a rail from the top of the guard down to the front and rear cross rails, then 2.5mm wall would be fine. The bit in Red is what I mean, and would only have to be 25mm SHS x 2.0mm wall, and then you could even build the chassis from 40mm SHS x 2.5mm wall.

    Thanks for every ones advice.

RE Making frame out of 40 X 40 X 2.5 with 25 mm RHS side rail.

1-Any advice on how to easily work out & cut the angles that are
needed on each end of the 25 X 25 ?

2-And the making the bend in the middle ?
Cold bend it, heat it, cut V's and reweld ?

3- Or what about making the whole frame out of 40 X 40 X 3
    or 65 X 35 X 3 with no side rail ?
