Classic and Wooden Boat Festival
Did anybody else go to the Classic and Wooden Boat Festival at Darling Harbour on the weekend?
I was there all day Saturday and had a great time Lots of gorgeous floating timber including a whole dock of Halvorsens.
I was hoping someone went along on the Sunday and could tell me the results of the rough and ready boat building competition. 5 teams had 2 hrs to build a boat using stitch and glue on Saturday then had to race them across the harbour on Sunday when the glue had, hopefully, set. I had to leave Sydney early on Sunday and missed the race. Those were the droids I was looking for.

NCArcher,
the quick & dirty boat building comp results were as follows
First to Team Sydney Heritage fleet with the clinker ply canoe, Second to Team timber ANMM with the Viking style canoe(Raced with horned sculptures to bow & stern), Third to Sponsors team, fourth to Team Soren Larson with the box outrigger, Fifth & only DNFloat) to Team Steel ANMM with the diamond shaped canoe.
Glad you enjoyed it, all the best from Jeff & the glue set fine !

Thanks Jeff,
I would have bet on the clinker canoe. Fairly surprised the Soren Larsen outrigger actually made it.
Were you in one of the teams? Those were the droids I was looking for.

There ya go
First couple are construction phase. Next 5 are the finished products with Jeff's effort being the last one. Last pic is some of the Halvorsen fleet that was on display.
I doubt that Jeff would have any pics of the race as I pressume he was busy paddlin' for all he's worthThose were the droids I was looking for.

done the Goolwa Rough'n'Ready a couple of times.
Lots of fun - 2hrs, 2 people, 2 sheets of ply, hand tools only.
Although more recent events have permitted battery drills.
Used Sikaflex here.
Looks like these used epoxy, yes?
the lapstrake one looks interesting. would be very time-consuming marking the
panels out reasonably accurately. Hard to cut curves with a handsaw too,
or were power saws permitted?
cheers

Epoxy was used, raced the next day, battery drills were allowed although one team(not mine) apparently had the full Dewalt set inc' circ saw- heard it but didn't see as was too busy, had the jigger drill just in case but woulda gone way overtime if needed. The clinker team was led by a seasoned competitor who has repped for Aus in a trans Tasman challenge quick & dirty, he did the development on the bus in that morning- using cardboard(not his bus ticket), full credit there as the vessel shape & build was pretty clever! This was my teams first go at this & I reckon a fair effort after some intense days setting up for the show, the sculpted heads were for decoration as allowed & added the next morning & added very little structural benefit.

on the bus that morning....
his name wasn't something like Oughtred, Riccelli, Payne or Fisher was it ?
We did an approximation of Bolger's Teal both times at Goolwa.
First time we won comfortably. All other competitors having sunk or had trouble
with the turn around the buoy 100M offshore.
Second time, we overtook the winners on the turn, but lost the sprint home to
the longer boat with a -much- stronger, fitter crew.
Great fun.

Three of the teams had battery circ saws. Jeff, only your team and the sponsor's team stuck to the hand tools. (battery drills are a hand tool )
At one point team steel ANMM produced some large 3/4" ply panels to use as bracing. The adjudicator quickly pulled them up for illegal substitution of materials but a packet of Tim Tams was produced and all was forgotten. From the results it didn't help them thoughThose were the droids I was looking for.

only one of those names in attendance so far as I'm aware but not competeing, & may have commented(I only represent myself to forums) on the builds.
& yeah it is heaps of fun! Dunno whats held me back from competing before, had a great day & paddled our guts out- could barely hold my mallet in the caulking comp!
