Default Second Paring Chisel Batch Order

Having completed the First Paring Chisel Batch Order. People have expressed interest in another batch run.

The Second Paring Chisel Batch Order chisels will have small changes to the look at feel of the chisels. The brass sockets will be a little different, the chisels will also be laser engraved with makers mark. The edge bevel grind will also be shaped differently. The handles will also be a little more meatier in places. Most of these changes are aesthetic in most part with only slight functional difference being the handle shape. The materials chosen remain the same as in the first batch order.

I have been asked if I would make a wider range of chisels by forum members. Therefore I will be offering a large range of chisels including sets of four, eight, very wide and skew chisels. Thereby accommodating everyone's requests.

We will therefore be offering seven options as outlined here:

    Option 1

    • 3 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 4.5 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 6 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 9 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 12 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 15 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 20 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 25 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket

    Option 2

    • 3 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 4.5 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 6 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 9 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 12 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 15 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 20 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 25 mm wide pairing chisel with a 225 mm long blade & Brass Socket

    Option 3 (Half Set)

    • 3 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 4.5 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 6 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 9 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket

    Option 4 (Half Set)

    • 12 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 15 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 20 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 25 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket

    Option 5 (Wider Chisel)

    • 35 mm wide pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket

    Option 6 (Skew Chisels)

    • 9 mm wide 20º LEFT SKEW pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 9 mm wide 20º RIGHT SKEW pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket

    Option 7 (Skew Chisels)

    • 12 mm wide 20º LEFT SKEW pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket
    • 12 mm wide 20º RIGHT SKEW pairing chisel with a 150 mm long blade & Brass Socket

    Bevels

All chisels will come with top and bottom ground flat and parallel, and with the edge and primary bevels ground. This is done to simplify the administration on my side and because the ungrounded chisels only had three out of 50 takers last time. Also grinding the primary bevel only cost's $5 and its well it as you will worth it because you will be getting a perfectly square and correctly angled primary bevel out of the box.

    Handle Option

You will have the option to get your chisels with or without handles. If you opt for handles we will be offering the handles in a range of Tasmanian Hardwoods. I have made contact with a supplier in Tasmania who can supply figured backwood, myrtle, musk, native olive and leatherwood at $12 per LM. I have bought some samples from them and I can confirm the quality and consistency. The handles will be 156 mm long.

    Caveat OR Proviso

Fine Pairing chisels are intended only for light pairing work and are not intended to be struck. These chisels will be ideal for pairing the likes of dovetails, furniture joinery, and musical instrument making.

    Technical

The chisels will be 3.3 mm thick fine pairing chisels made from M2 HSS, heat treated to Rc 62 - 64.

    Manufacturing

The steel will be supplied by Bohler in Melbourne, The chisels will be waterjet cut, then heat treated in a Salt bath furnace by Surface Technology a.k.a. Sutton Tools. Milling and grinding will be undertaken by Rippon. Each chisel will be supplied with a matching set of brass sockets turned on CNC lathe. Each handle which will be costumed turned by G J Lawson Woodturning. This means that the chisels will come as a complete package with all necessary component requiring only assembly and sharpening.

    CAD Drawings

Attached are the CAD drawings of the chisels, brass sockets, and optional hardwood handle.

    Expression of Interest

I intend to make this a smaller batch order, then last time, with no more then about 25 sets being available or about 200 chisels. The following people so far have expressed interest in taking part in the Second Paring Chisel Batch Order.

    • Dj’s Timber
    • Thumbsucker
    • Kevjed
    • GreenTemple
    • Greg St. John (ANU)
    • Jack E
    • gnu52

This means we have only 18 sets available at this point. If you want to put your name down for a set or option post in thew thread or PM me. I will be under allocating this order, incase we have any duds in the heat treating, if we have any spare we can find homes for them closer to the end.

    Cost's

I forgot to enter the safety margin. So their has been an update to the price.

Regardless of option the cost per chisel is $57 without a handle, if you want a handle it will be $68.

Here is a sample of a first batch order chisel set:

More Photos from the first chisel batch order, can be found here, here band here.

Hi Gerry do you want a standard 150 mm long or do you want the longer 225 mm set? As a general purpose set I would recommend the 150 mm. Also would you like highly figured blackwood handles with your chisels?

Please put me down for option 5 and 7 without handles please
Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.

Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.
