The Pug
I had a commission recently for a cane with a Pug handle. The lady has a bad hip and so needs to put a bit of weight on the stick when she uses it so the handle had to be comfortable. Consequently, I couldn't just carve the Pug and fit it as a 'knob' type handle. Eventually, I decided on a derby style handle with extra mass at the front to carve the Pug head.
This one took me a long way out of my comfort zone and I'm not completely happy with the finished result, but the customer was so I guess that's what's important. I learned a bit from doing it so next time should be better.
The carving/handle is English Lime, the spacers are Kangaroo Thorn and Acacia Wattle and the shaft is Jarrah.
Hope you like..

Not a great lover of Pugs but its a great looking cane and a very nice carving job. Good craftsmen should always have a healthy dissatisfaction of their work, thats what make the next piece better than the last. I like commissions, they do take you out of your comfort zone and make you do a higher quality job than you might normaly. people say can you make this? the standard answer is "yes" then you have to go away and work out how. Well done Whittlin.
