    Default Table top hinges?

I'm contemplating making a new dining table with a top which swivels and then opens like a book to effectively double its size.
What sort of hinges can I get that will be unobtrusive when the top is closed and flush with the surface when it's open?
    Any advice gratefully recieved.

What you want are counter hinges.

    they are: butler table hinges

    An aussie website

Horton Brasses - always exceptional quality

I'm sure Elraco stocks them as well, and another link discussing this similiar thing from here

    Cheers
    Wendy

snap! I like the hinges Woodwould has suggested.

Careful Wendy; proper butler's tray hinges (the first two in your link) only open through 90° i.e. the sides of the tray open from vertical to horizontal. What Pugwash wants are counter hinges (the ones with the toggles in them) that open a full 180°.

Thanks to everyone for the useful (and very quick) advice. I think counter hinges are the way to go. The SOSS invisible hinge looks good too, but perhaps not as strong screwing into the edge rather than the face.

I've had success looking for card table hinges. Not sure, but they look to be the same as the table hinges. Just another option for a google search I guess.

WW, I must disagree. There are SOSS style hinges for boxes, table leaves and doors.

There may well be, but the one you linked to is unsuitable... which is why I said so.

I used the SOSS hinges in a Butterfly leaf extension table without any problems and the drawings on the SOSS site show the hinge opening to 180 deg.

Nice table! However, those hinges aren't what Pugwash needs for the envelope table he describes. The toggle will stand proud of the surface when his leaves are open.

That's what I like about this site . You can learn something new " [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0JfKKH4g6g"]envelope table [/ame]" every day.
