I expect that the colour of the timber you used will be absolutely stunning thenregards

I could start on the desk or i could make another (more betterer) bench. I've got enough recycled wood left.
The vice is a Carbatec large face vice. It has a little too much play in the castings. If you clamp something tightly towards the top of the vice it will pull the bottom in and drag the jaw out of square. I can't really complain. It was only $75 I think. Might replace it with a LV twin screw if i can scrounge up enough cash. It wouldn't be hard to retrofit a leg vice either. The other vice is a Record Quick Release and it is excellent. I probably would have been better off with two of those.
Aus Maddog, I have no idea what the dimensions are. I pretty much made it up as i went. I'd have to measure to be exact but around 1800 x 700 x 65 thick. The legs are around 95 square. The length was the maximum i can fit in my shop and still be able to move around it. I hopeThose were the droids I was looking for.

It's been miserable and cold here. Not good weather for applying a finish.
However, I managed to get 2 coats on the underside. Just went with the straight BLO. Decided it was a better option for refinishing down the track after the unavoidable bumps and dings.
The first 3 pics are of my 'flip the top' method. A couple of ratchet straps over the rafters. Hoist it up, flip it in the straps and lower. Easy
The last 2 pics are the finished bench with the first coat on the top. The BLO darkens it a bit but I still like the look. The last one is a look at the different timbers in the top after the first coat of BLO.Those were the droids I was looking for.

Would you mind explaining your dog hole layout and spacing for me. I am marking mine out right now and would be interested in your comments.
BTW, I am jealous as hell about that aerial turning rig you have.

My movable dog is the one built into the QR vice that I am using as a tail vice. The dog holes are spaced just a bit less than the maximum movement of the tail vice. I've been using scrap to pad and position the workpiece and it works, and holds, extremely well.
Rock solid when it is tightened up. The back row is spaced wider apart to use holdfasts. It was just a "this looks about right" for the first one. I think the dog holes were 150 apart (vice opening around 200 or a bit more) and the back row were 300 apart. The row of dog holes is probably further from the edge than a traditional bench but I wanted maximum clamping width from the vice because it will be used as a vice as often as a movable dog. I haven't found the position of the dog holes to be too far from the edge though. I like the extra support on a wider piece.
I also put a few holes in opposite the face vice so I can put some dogs in the face vice jaw and have another clamping option. I haven't drilled the vice jaw yet and I probably won't till I have a need.
And I think i have flipped the top for the last time. Those were the droids I was looking for.

I just went and measured up. The dog holes are 150 apart, holdfast holes are 300 apart and spaced midway between the dog holes. Both sets of holes are around 160 from the edge. Unfortunately the first dog hole is unusable unles the vice is all the way out. The vice screw blocks the hole. I'm not overly concerned but if you are using a similar vice it would be worth considering moving the first hole further from the vice.
The overall dimensions are 1880mm x 620mm x 880mm high. Top is 64mm thick, legs are 94mm square. Dog/holdfast holes are 3/4" or 19mm.Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thanks for the tips. I have finished marking out and have a single row of holes along the skirt about 160mm in from the edge, spaced at 100mm intervals. I decided not to put dogs in the vice face as I have the wagon vise.
I've also run across the bench in a few places where I will want to anchor boards or use the holdfasts. They are spaced at 200 and 150mm runs. The hard ones to drill will be the ones into the skirt.
