Well done to both of you!

Lets hope that the rest of the process (Considering it is then out of our control) goes as smoothly!

    A little news.

    Money:
Groggy has transferred about 95% of our bill to Juergen today. We had a bit of off-forum discussion, and decided to go now because the $oz is slipping against the Euro. We transferred at .01 Euro off the peak of 0.75. Today it's 0.737 so probably just in the nick. This is being caused by the kerfuffle on the Stock Exchange. Interesting to note that it remains the same against the USD at $1.066 but that's because the US economy is kangarooted.

    Drill order:
Spoke to Juergen last night and discussed stock. He is in the process of determining any shortages, and I asked him what sort of lead time there would be if there were some unavailable parts. "two weeks or two months?" and it would be closer to two weeks. In that case we would hold the shipment until all stock is ready. If it was two months then obviously we get sent what is available.

Our order is a little unusual for him in that whilst it's not the biggest (although still pretty sizeable) it has a great deal of part numbers (188) so it takes a little longer to check.

    Freight:
He has had a quote from DHL which he thinks is too high, and is waiting for another. We won't be able to finalise the freight until the orders are packed & ready to go because of the weight of the packaging and the dimensions. I'm still favouring 9 packages sent to different Airports - SYD 5, BRIS 1, PERTH 1, MELB 2 rather than one monster package which will attract 5% Import Duty and 10% GST and anything else they think of over morning tea.

The mathematics of this is pretty simple. Let's say the big package, including freight and insurance is $5000 with the actual goods component $4500, and the freight is $500. Then, assume that ID, GST ++ is 20%. That makes it $6000.

Now let's look at 9 packages all under $1000 including freight & insurance. The freight is obviously going to be more, so let's double it. Total bill is $5500 as opposed to $6000.

In other words, in this example (and it is just that) the freight for the individual packages would have be triple ($1500) to be the same as paying ID & GST etc on one big package. I can't see it being triple.

Now with that in mind, if there are stock shortages we can still get at least some of the packages underway. At least then I'd have something less than 47 people on my case! Kidding, kidding, you've all been very diligent and patient.

PS: Actual exchange rate was 0.7283 Figures quoted above are just Google.

Well precied and good thinking to move now with the exchange rate wavering. Appreciate the updates. It's good to be kept in the loop.

And, the $1000 import duty free threshold is based on the value of the A$ on the day the order is made. Which in effect is the day the funds were transferred.

Neil, I just read about that recently (but will have to revisit for certainty). I'm almost 100% sure that the rate is the day of shipping, which stands to reason. If you ordered and paid for the goods in two payments, what would they do? If you ordered the goods 3 months before (because they had to be made) what would they do? The only commonality is the day of shipment.

I think that there probably will be. I wasn't going to but there have been a few PMs about it, and there are also the new products coming on line in July/August. These are Forstner bits going up to 100mm in metric and Imperial, and also the new MaxiCut Plus Forstners which have an adjustable depth Brad Point pilot drill instead of a centring point. This enables holes to be drilled on a significantly higher angle. Furthermore, they are HSS, but not M2 steel.

I also think that the Colt virgins amongst the current group will probably want to expand their range once they find out for themselves just how easy drilling difficult timbers can be.

I'll be calling Juergen tomorrow night to see where we are up to with the freight quote and stock availability.
