FenceFurniture - put me down for about $250 worth of the drills.

In terms of sharpening the Colt forstners, this can be easily done using just a fine diamond hone (like the DMT), plus one small curved diamond needle file. The actual cutting edge is designed so that the bit presents just one large flat surface to be honed, and there is only a tiny portion of curved "nicker" on the outside of the cutter that requires the diamond file. This is in contrast to conventional forstners which present a multitude of curved/serrated surfaces needing to be sharpened.

I've had my Colt forstners for about 12 months, used them in a variety of hardwoods with a drill press (including some quite abrasive timbers like brushbox), and have only needed to resharpen once so far. Haven't used them on a lathe, but I believe some other forumites have tried this (with the extension).

Meh, on HCS a triangular file is all you really need. But a flat file or diamond hone makes it easier on the chipping edge.

    Default Keep them coming...

Well, we just hit $5000 Aussie. It'd be very cool to hit 5000 Euros.

BTW, I've invited Juergen to have at look at this thread, but that may not happen until Monday 8pm. He may be a little surprised at the strength of the response. The point being that the more he can see in a short period of time will give us some reasonable clout.

He's gunna read that isn't he! Oopsie. Nah, all's cool. My original email said something about "excellent factory direct prices". Didn't it Juergen?

Groggy, I'm shocked at you. Surely you don't mean that your current intent of $300 for say 40 drills could be increased to 60 drills for $300??

On the understanding that your orders may change when we finalise pricing, it may be a good idea to send me a PM (rather than cluttering up the thread) with your rough list of part numbers only (don't worry about the names or descriptions). That way I can get a bit of a head start on entering the data into my spreadsheet (that phase will require a bit of programming, which takes time).

BTW, you may have noticed that the sets of 5 or 7 etc don't seem to show much, if any, savings (I can do without a free wooden case, coz it'll only go into a pile of other empty cases anyway). On the odd occasion there is a saving (metric forstners) but other times it actually costs an extra $2 to get a case (that I don't want anyway). If you haven't noticed, there is a summary to the right of the set totals. If the figure is +ve and black it's a saving. If it's red (or another colour) and -ve it means you pay extra.

I'm yet to find out why this is the case but will certainly get to the bottom of it, in due course.

I only remembered after I put the spreadsheets online that I use a different colour palette to the standard boring one that Excel provides. This means that you could well be getting some very weird looking colours in the sheet, as Excel will probably revert back to it's palette in your machine (the colour is represented by it's position in the chart, and so if I have a really nice blue where your burgundy is then you'll get burgundy, which is really dumb Bill).

    Cheers, FF

FenceFurniture what is the difference between - Colt 5 Star HSS Brad Point and the FCE Professional HSS Drill Bits? As they both seem to have the same Part No.
