I use kerosine and scrub them with an old toothbrush and a rag.
Don't have a clue if that's the recommended procedure or not, but it works for me.

Paint thinner, solvent, and a tooth brush... All you want to do is disolve the old oil and float out the built up grime in the stones pores.

Boil them up in an old saucepan full of water with a bit of washing soda thrown in. Can't remember how much, prob a small half handful (sounds like drive-in shenannigans (sp?) ).
Washing soda is found in the laundry section of the supermarket.

My old man (not passed away but gone blind )always told me to soak 'em in kero. He always recommended using a mixture of oil 50/50 with kero as a lubricant.
Has worked for me - try it if you like - might not be as quick as some of the other ideas but I have reservations about water in an environment that I would normally only use oil based products with. Might just be a myth but seems anomalous to me.

Gday Jamie, take your point about the water but the water/soda mix has a degreasing effect and boils a lot of the crap out of the stone.
After this you rinse the stone, let all the water dry out, and go back to using oil/kero/whatever as your usual lubricant.
It does work well to clean the stone, but makes a mess of the saucepan. DAMHIKT
