I'm not qualified to judge the merit of these ideas but it is an interesting read:

Yes, looks a interesting concept, I'd be curious to hear Mik's reaction. The bow looks similar to Mik's drawing, but most other things - V'd bottom and rocker (or lack thereof) seem quite different to what Mik has drawn.
(To clarify, it looks like the original post by keyhavenpotter that brought this design to attention here has been deleted from this thread)

Any update? - BUMP!
Hi MIK,
Any news on the 12'er front yet?

Ahum, I don't really dear to, but with MIK being back and the question still lingering on in my head I thought I would bump this thread:
Is there any progress regarding the 12 footer (either the "wooden Laser" or a more conservative boat)?
Best wishes, Joost

I am keen on a performance 12fter as well. I had a bit of time last Friday afternoon, so I used the initial sketches that MIK had provided earlier in this thread and cut out a 20th scale backbone in cardboard which I then used to loft out corrected panels for a stitch and glue hull with correct rocker and flare. I have a 20th scale (re 18cm on a 3.6m length) mock up. I'll take some pictures tonight and post them tomorrow.
I was planning to take measurements of my scale model and build a 'disposable' prototype out of 3mm ply and use my OzRacer rig and foils initially then build a new rotating mast with a jib and main NS14 style.
I'm happy to share (with MiKs permission of course). I was thinking the S360 or Storer 360 would be a cool name.

I'm wondering how similar, or different, this GIS 12er might be to CLC's Jimmy Skiff (Jimmy Skiff: A Chesapeake Bay Rowing & Sailing Skiff That You Can Build!).
Thoughts?

Just re-read this thread, and realised that my post belongs in the recreational side of the designs ...

Modelling
As mentioned yesterday I promised to share my modeling which I plan to take my panel layout offsets from. This model was constructed by taking the measurements for from top and bottom from the above view and the heights from the side view. I then made a series of frames which I glued to a rocker template which I made from the side view. From this hardback frame I fit the bottom and side panels which I taped up with two bulkheads to determine the overall 3D hull dimensions. I wont be able to start a prototype for a little while as I am reworking the final touches to my Oz Racer and my wife and I are expecting our first baby in Feb.
The original design lines and my model overlaying. The rocker and dimensions are pretty much spot on.
Here is a the form as it sits on my table.
I have been deliberating the centerboard and mast positions. The SoG study plans have the COE further forward than I would like. As I want to be able to run both a single sail (ie an OzRacer rig) with a COE 800mm aft of mast position and a modern jib/main combo I am moving it all aft a bit (and have two mast positions, one through deck and one stepped deck). I have some preliminary measurements at home but the mast position for the two sailed rig would be around 1500mm.
Deck layout I am thinking low level self draining floor with sealed side deck air compartments as most modern high performance dinghy's such as the NS14 and Cherub have, although it may be easier and simpler to have a layour similar to the OZRacer with no false floor, but side decks and rear sealed compartments.
Anyway, I'm sure it will all come together eventually. I'll sketch up my foil and rig placements when I get time and post them in this thread.

Hi Tim,
Very nice to see a model.
Would you be happy to take more pics?
The trick is to think about what height someone's eye would be at relative to the sheerline of the boat. And put the camera at that same angle. Might be interesting to have a look around the boat in that way. Like standing near the boat or seeing the boat sailing at a distance .. heeling toward the viewer as well as away.
A model always gives me a slightly different idea from my computer model, even though I look on the computer from all the likely angles.
Thanks hugely for going to the effort of making the model.

Hi Mik,
More than happy to take a few more pics. I can post them here or shoot them to you in an email if you prefer.
My initial thoughts are that the bow rocker is a little too high and the depth of the hull at the bow is a little low. It does look aggressive and reminds me of the skate dinghy.
I think it may look even better with a bit more flare in the sides towards the back and at the transom transom.
No dramas with putting the model together. I was interested in seeing how it would come together. Also I wanted to take some initiative as I was getting the impression the project was slipping onto the back burner. There is a distinct lack of a simple construction performance dinghy in the 12ft range, and the fact that this thread and the other SoG thread total about 10 pages demonstrate that there is demand for a boat of this style.

Post any pics here ... then people can see what you mean (including me). Would be very interested to see your points. It is easy to fiddle with things at this stage.
Still no promises .. but ... it is a further step.
The bow rocker in the extreme bow is something I have observed from the quick canoes. It means the stem keeps out of the water with a wide variation of different loadings.
There is a tendency to worry about waterline length relating to speed but I don't think it is valid on two points.
1/ "waterline length" is a handy method of finding the length of the volume of the hull.
Any wavemaking is about volume distribution. An example of misapplication was that Flying Dutchmen used to sail downwind with the rudder blades swung up horizontally behind the boat to "increase waterline length" in the late 1960s. It should be clear from this misapplication that waterline length is about volume distribution - the rudder blade having no ability to influence the overall volume..
2/ I am thinking that such a bow will allow both heavy and light sailors and two up sailors to not need excessive rocker through the body of the boat. Too much rocker would reduce its ability to get past "hull speed" with no noticeable pause like the goat despite the higher weight per unit length of the hull for the shorter boat.
I have also started to see it in a number of other high performance boats - not a lot, but here and there.
Best wishes
Michael

Finally
Sorry about the delay in posting these photos. I have been rather busy over the last few weeks, but I am back at work again now. I was almost going to shelve this project as a mate had offered me two old NS14's in need of restoration, but it all fell through and they ended up being sold elsewhere.
The model is now looking a bit squashed so I will make another one. I have traced out the panels so I might scan this is in and upload to the forums so others can make a model and have a play around with the concept.
I have a little bit of cash and some Bunning's vouchers so once the hull shape is getting close to final I'm going to bite the bullet and start a 'disposable' prototype using some cheap ply. Just want to solicit some more feedback before biting the bullet. MIK is it possible to create accurate panel offsets from your original design? If not I'll just upscale from these templates.

Thanks hugely for the pics,
I will tweak the shape a bit and give you accurate measurements.
Keep on my case through email.
