Default ER32 Collet chuck - where to buy

Hi I am after a ER32 collet chuck, the spindle mount type that allows you to have a work piece run through it . I might have a go at making one myself ...laugh . I see chronos is out of stock on that item. Any suggestions welcome. MIKE

CTC tooling seems to be one place worth a look.

I've been drooling over the ER32's on their ebay store.

I don't think CTC Tools have an ER32 collet chuck which allows work to pass through.

As far as I know, there's only one way to achieve this, and that's to make your own.

I have seen posts on this very topic on o/s forums, I'll see if I can find the article.

From memory, a standard ER collet chuck had the arbor cut off. The chuck part was then machined to screw directly onto the lathe spindle.

Mike, such a simple collet chuck body is not too hard to make yourself. The most complex part is actually the closer nut, but fortunately you can buy ready made closer nuts from China on eBay for peanuts.

The problem with bought simple ER collet chucks is the registration to the lathe spindle. If it is not a perfect and tight fit, it will not mount repeatably. Meaning the chuck body will have a different runout, everytime you screw it onto the spindle. One of the most valued advantage of using a collet chuck being accuracy, a poorly fitting registration is very bad news. A runout of more than 0.01mm is considered bad, a runout of half as much is considered average for a collet chuck body. The runout of the collet itself comes on top of this and may add to it or cancel out (ER collets are usually better than 0.005mm in runout, even the cheap ones from China).

Now if yo buy a generic ready made 1 1/2" collet chuck, you will understand that it has to be made such as to fit to many different lathe make, to many different model of greatly varying vintage. The only way to achieve this, is to build it slightly oversize. Meaning slightly sloppy. Meaning bad repeatability with constantly changing runout.

If you make your own, you can make it a perfect fit for YOUR particular spindle nose.

If you were looking for such a collet chuck for a Hercus 260, you will find that no such ready made chucks exist at all - its 1 3/4 x8tpi spindle nose mount is far too rare.

You may be interested in seeing how a simple ER collet chuck can be homemade starting from a NUT. Have a look at the yahoo group "9x20lathe", in the file section under "homemade M39 Collet Chuck". You have to join that group to download the .pdf plan. If you are already a member, use this link:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/9x20La..._Collet_Chuck/
Obviously, you would have to substitute the M39 nut for a 1.5" nut or whatever you need. This particular plan is well suited for people that are not yet experienced enough to make an accurately fitting spindle register in one piece. The register is made separately in the form of a washer, which is then later glued with Araldite to te collet body whilst mounted on the lathe spindle, thus assuring concentricity.

    Hope this helps, Chris

Aametalmaster submitted this thread not so long ago.

It describes how he made an ER40 collet chuck for his lathe.

    Ah great info.

I joined that 9X20 forum, found the article in German ..that's the one I think ? Thankfully somebody has translated it for us

I also found an article by Jim Benjamin on the Southbend 10k yahoo group . He made a collet chuck also .. his article is in the files section there.

Ken's link is a good read too .

I should be right from now on ..make my own .

To which can be added Building an ER collet chuck from scratch for a Myford ML7

The original ER collet adaptor was featured in the English Model Engineer's Workshop magazine some time ago and in several articles. ( issue 86?)

An alternative that was used by a member of the Model Engineers Society I belong to was to cut the rear off the chuck and use the front in a Master chuck arrangement - CI ring on a small backing plate - how the collet chuck was held in this arrangement I am not sure. The interesting thing is how to cut the chuck as it is probably hardened all over.

    Regards,
    David

    Default Chuck

    Hi Ken

    Thanks for the excellent link.

I had to wait for the internal 60 degree threading bit from chronos to arrive. I don't feel confident enough to make a bit like that.

    I will go to it

    Mike
