Thank you guys for the comments. Made a few pieces today.

Finished the leading wheels. Made the outer rims out of maple. I made them a little different than the last ones. I drilled the center out with a fostner bit and then roughed the outsied on the bandsaw. Glued them as close as I could to center and the turned the o.d. on the lathe. Seem to get a better cut than the with the holesaws.

For some reason I had to sand all of the top of the pivot off so the truck would sit under the front and not raise the front driver wheels 1/8" off the track. Not sure what happened but a measurement somewhere is off

I soaked a walnut wheel in the ebonizing solution for 6 hours and this is what it looks like now pretty dark.

    Thats it for now

Looking good, Bret. You're progressing well. (Unlike me.)

Having to sand the pivot down won't affect the appearance of the finished model, so I wouldn't be concerned if I were you.

    Keep up the great work.

    Yes Pete,
Bret's ability with the camera & notes is as good as his craftsmanship in the woodwork...
Thanks Bret for all the extra time & effort to do all the photos & extra notes to being the train alive for everyone.
    Cheers, crowie

Thanks guys for the comments. Bob you are correct my friend the Loco is almost finished. I have the trailing wheels truck to finish, cowcatcher, and some rails for the back of the cab and it will be done. Then there is the matter of the tender. But it is pretty straightfoward nothing really tricky about it. Only thing time consuming will be the 24 wheels I have to make for it.

    Bob,

I had thought about just leaving it natural. There are so many small parts and places. Next project is a scratch built 32' ford 3 window hot rod. I'm thinking 1/12th scale

With the speed you produce bits for this train if I blink you would have all the wheels for the tender finished .

I finished making the Trailing truck this evening except for the for bearing blocks on the outside. I had to mill some more 1/2" for the center pivot so while I was at it I milled the base for the tender. It is really long!

All of the parts mocked up. The 1/4" axles slide inside 1/2" spacers between the wheels. There is a rear and front spacer.

Mocked under the train. Its a tight fit but I guess I made all the parts right there is plenty of clearance

The base for the tender. 15 3/4" long

Steve these pics are for you. This is what my resaw looks like with a 3/8" 3tpi skip tooth timberwolf blade.
