Default Is a combo jointer/thicknesser a good jointer

I have a carbatec 6 inch jointer and sometimes wish I had a wider machine.
I find it curious that 8 inch and wider jointers are quite expensive and yet you can buy a 10 or 12 inch combination thicknesser/jointer for less than an 8 inch jointer
I am not interested in using a combo machine for both tasks but is it a cheap way to get a wider jointer or is there a fundamental problem. They do seem to have a relatively short table length for their width

I had the same jointer, upgraded from it to the 12" woodfast one Carbatec sell. It is a great machine, the only disadvantages I see are that you cannot change the hight of the outfeed table, so you cannot do simple concave style butt joints (plane it so when you hold the boards together there is a slight gap in the middle). And the tables are shorter than that of a designated jointer of the same size. But I rate mine, and it is far better than my old 6" jointer. Thicknesser works well also, 3mm of a 10" piece of jarrah. But definitly get some 18% blades.
Cheers, don't know if this helpsp

I also have a 16" cheaper brand planer/thicknesser. Once set up properly it does a pretty good job. The problem for me is that every time I use the thicknesser I loose the finetuning of the planer. This can become very time consuming.

I suppose if you find that a machine like this is a cheaper way of buying a wide jointer, they are fine. A longer bed would be nice...
