    Default Railway Sleepers

    Hi all,

I'm curious as to whether there are any health and safety issues related to working with old railway sleepers e.g. any pollution that could have been sucked up in their time?

    Cheers

Unknown. Anything from creosote applied under pressure, to insecticides and herbicides, cyanide and arsenic and asbestos from train brake linings.

Not to mention that small chip of blue metal that seems to have miraculously made its way through solid wood to end up taking a big chip out of your freshly sharpened thicknesser blades.

And if the sleepers have been used on old passenger lines don't forget the lime covered human excrement
