Metal suppliers - Hobart area
As I slowly get the shed set up, I find I need a few bits of metal for this and that.
Any recommendations as to metal suppliers in or around Hobart?
As I'll be buying less than full lengths, I'll need someone that will cut to size.
Mostly aluminium but at the moment I need a 4 metres length of steel to use as a straight edge.Geoff

For Aluminium try Ullrich Metals in Albert Road, or Capral in Grove Road. You might have to buy a full length but they will cut it for you. I have bought short lengths by the metre from Capral before but this was only available for limited stock range and was a few years ago. Don't know if they still do it.
For steel there is Metaland in Sunderland Street and I have found Nubco good to deal with. Both will cut.
Otherwise, get friendly with a local fabrication shop. There are plenty of them around and they might sell you something, probably for a price though as they have to make a living too. Try Dynamic Welding, they are a bloody good outfit. MASS Welding do Aluminium and stainless work I believe but I have never dealt with them.
If you are looking for aluminium sheet or light plate a boat builder might sell you some. (Midnight Marine or Tristar maybe?) If you are looking for thicker aluminium plate I believe the Incat shipyard will sell offcuts.
If you just want light weight extruded sections the big green shed starting with B has a fair range.
There is always Offcuts Galore too if you only want little bits and pieces. Highly recommended. (online seller at Quicksales)
Cheers, Cameron.

Cameron,
Thanks for the info. It's good to know which suppliers will cut to length, anything over 4.2 metres won't fit in the van
I'll have to check out Offcuts Galores shipping costs to Hobart, I used to buy quite a lot of stuff off him when I was in Sydney.Geoff

If your own transport is the limitation on length, you can get suppliers to deliver.
Nubco have a truck, and I have got them to deliver 6m lengths before. Think it was about $50 delivery fee, which is a fair bit if it is only a small order, but could be cost effective if you need more than a few lengths. If you get full lengths delivered you can cut it to whatever size you want once you have got it home..
I have seen an Ulrich Metals truck buzzing around town, so they would probably deliver too.
Offcuts Galore shipping is by Express Post. I got something delivered just a week ago, it was only about $20 for the satchel up to 5 kg.
Cheers, Cameron.

Delivery would only be an option for a larger order as I'm in the Huon Valley and know from experience how much freight costs from Hobart!

There is a Nubco branch in Kingston, so a little bit closer to you than Hobart CBD.
Cheers, Cameron.

Nubco Kingston have a reasonable range of bright mild round bar, 316 stainless and the usual pipe & tube in black, galvanised, stainless & ally. Some sheets as well. Good people to deal with. I buy a fair bit from them. They'll sell by the metre or length & cut for you. If it's something exotic, forget it, you have to go up town.
Cawthorn Welding at Electrona will sell offcuts etc but from the Huon I'm not sure if it's worth going there as opposed to up town distance-wise.
I'm near Kettering so I know what you mean about freight....

Nice to know that Nubco will cut to size. Nothing worse than having to buy a 6 metre length of something you only need half a metre of!
I need an excuse to visit the Margate tip shop so I'll make a run over there during the week.
The only problem with Nubco is that they sell machines too - I'd better leave the credit cards at homeGeoff

They seem to be selling more of the Hare & Forbes line these days, I've noticed more lathes etc on the floor. Fortunately I need another lathe or mill like I need another hole in the head so only something fairly exotic would tempt me.
I hear Prochem in Derwent Park is better for stainless, which I'm going to check out fairly soon as I need a full length of 32NB Sched 10 for my boat gallows frame plus a pile of 20NB for railings. If the 316 is too expensive it'll be back to galvanised.
