Great bench Derek. I have enjoyed this thread more than most as it involved plenty ideas from others and some new ways to look at how things are done. Pretty good effort for just 7 weekends too.

    Thanks Bob

A visit from you is way overdue. We shall have to arrange another workshop and BBQ for the lads as a backdrop for a closer inspection. We've not had one for a while. Any ideas?

    Sounds good !

I'm flat out over the next 6 weeks, trying to move cupboards and stuff currently on the back patio back into the shed before the rain comes back, sons wedding, and a 9 day trip to Holland for work just after easter.

    Hi Greg

Let me have your dates and I'll let you know. There is the Fine Woodworking club meetings, which have interesting demonstrations.

Linking with my comment to Bob, perhaps we can organise a workshop at my place (with BBQ) to coincide with your visit. Then you'll get a chance to meet some of the local forumites. I know I will enjoy catching up with you.

    Regards from Perth

The grand opening of Bob's New shed could be on the cards?

Remember the Progressive Dinner Parties that were all the rage in the 60s &70s? You know, where you had Canapes at Derek's place, entree at Joe's place, and finished up with a big steak at Bob's place. I sniff a Progressive Perth Shed Party coming on.....

Something small and delicate (not the bench) at Derek's place, a big slabbing of Jarrah at Bob's place...you get the idea.

Derek, I should be there 28 May to 01 Jun. I also have to be in Darwin, Townsville, Brisbane and Adelaide for a week each so it should be an interesting and busy couple of months! There may be some date changes as I am only just getting in contact with a number of organisations who need to be available - their schedules can drive mine.

Poking around another shed is always interesting, especially for a Grand Opening

    Default Gone to the dogs!

Thanks BD. I was hoping to have finished it all the past weekend, but did not get much workshop time. Too many social events. In all I had about 2 hours, and in that I made the dogs. Now the bench is a working bench.

I will complete the shelf and a few odds-and-ends after this coming weekend, which is the annual Perth LN Hand Tool Event. Chris Vesper is staying over and we are both presenters all weekend.

The old bench has gone to a new home. I offered it to the first person to cart it away. Hopefully it will give them good service for a few more years.

I did take photos of the dog-making procedure and will post them, if anyone is interested.

Here is a picture of the bench with the Jarrah pieces used for the dogs. It may interest some to note the 2 degree angle (facing the tail vise) ..

Here is one of the dogs (they are all identical), with a head dimension of 1" x 1 1/2" x 5" long. They are faced in suede leather.

The dogs all recess flush with the bench top when not in use ..

I really like the ability to raise them to a height that is needed ...

The leg vise runs very smoothly. I am waiting on pieces of suede leather for the inner faces as they are a bit slippery and work pieces can be moved. I tested the grip with a temporary leather insert, and this made a significant difference. Anyone with comments here is very welcome. ..

The bench in its new home ..

    Regards from Perth
