Thanks Phil, I started out with the intention of just doing what had to be done to get the machine fully operational, but because the previous owner had done such a shoddy job and painted over critical bits of the machine, I ended up having to clean paint off, and then felt obliged to fix up the paint work... it's a slippery slope, once you start it's hard to know when to stop... I guess one solution would be to not start... but it's now too late for that....

I think the name Dulux Restoration, that Harty coined, is going to stick,

This particular machine, had green paint over the scales, the head wouldn't rotate because the paint had stuck the head to the column, I can't see that it could have been used since being painted. Oil holes, and oil caps painted over... I can only assume that an apprentice was given a brush and a can (of dulux of course) and let loose..

It reminds me of that all blue smurf lathe ( LeBlond was it ) that someone had painted the cross slides on...

Underneath it all there is a nice enough machine waiting to be restored to working condition.

I did find the original colour under the green, and it's a pretty close match to the blue-grey I got..

Yes thanks, I did, and put in a bid on both of those, the guy selling those has a house and yard full of stuff that's apparently got to be seen to be believed. I just wish he wouldn't keep listing those packets of nuts and bolt for sale in the machinery section...

I don't mind the "flight rust" on the wheel dresser, I can sort that out, if it's not too badly pitted.

Flight rust, yeah right, looks like the plane overran the runway and ended up in the drink.

Into the tub of molasses and water for a few weeks while you finish the rest.


A quick surface grind of the base and bob's your uncle. Oh, I forgot about your "Dulux" resto. It's not real critical as regards to accuracy as it is just plonked on the magnetic chuck. Did we tell you that you will need one of them as well. I just bought one of the cheapies from LPR. Except for the 201 piece knob for the handle; it has worked ok.

I haven't seen Nicholas' Box Hill premises; but I have been to his shed in Heathcote. Worst part was that he appeared to have heaps of shyte inside and there was one servian mill outside that would cost you 40000 to buy new. Wish I had of known that he had that K&T universal mill with vertical and slotting heads before I bought that POS hm50.

Hi All,

Here's a dumb question, what's the difference between a "50 NS" taper and 50 NMTB? NT50 etc...

The workhead taper is supposed to be 50 NS, I measure the taper as 3.5 inches per foot, which is right for NT, NMTB, CAT, ISO tapers, and the diameter is in the ballpark for 50, ( 2 3/4") but I haven't been able to find any information on "NS" I'm guessing it's some subtle difference in the flange or drawbar thread or something.

EDIT: I finally sorted it out... NS National Standard, is just a different designation for NMTB, 50 NS is same as NMTB 50... 1" x 8 tpi draw bar.

I've never seen either of Nicholas's places, but heard a few stories... and yes I've got a mag chuck. 300x150, from Asset if I remember correctly I bought it to use on a compound sine table. Should do the trick.
