Wipe On Finish

Loving the finish on that bass there Peter.
I'm leaning towards Danish oil more at the moment, I like the look of it as well as the health and ease of use aspects. Does it hold up well enough by itself or should something else be put over it to protect the timber more?

found danish to be pretty good
if it gets a bit cruddy a good rub down with steel wool [0000 only] and a burnish with the back of a piece of wet n dry will bring it back

you can also clean it up with shellite and go over it with a light coat of furniture oil
it is very hard to remove danish to bare wood - once on thats it

tru-oil comes off very easily with acetone - i did a project in it and didn't like a lot of its properties - i removed 8 coats in very short order

I have used it as a finish on furniture Ray but then again I work fast so there is plenty of heat I go crazy with the buffer, so what one would you suggest.? regards Bob

when i looked at it i discounted it - wondered about getting a decent buff inside the lower horn - i had visions of furiously buffing a guitar and it grabbing, flying across the room and scaring the cr@p out the dogs - bouncing off a wall and ending up on the fire - probably erring way over on the carefull conservative side there

i am sure it would be great on a guitar -
i wonder what is actually in this stuff - you could bet it aint just oils

Your right Ray, I forgot about the horn this would be hard to do but I like the product and as far as I know the products are all natural from plants, so all I can suggest is look through there website and see what else is more suitable or try Neils product.

I have used for sometime now a 50:50 mixture of acrylic lacquer and thinners that I rub on with a tack free cloth - works a treat and lasts. You could then finish with Danish oil - say 2 coats (again rubbed on) and rub back between coats of the oil when dry with 0000 steel wool. Danish oil gives a lovely patina. Drillit. PS. Use a mask with the thinners/lacquer and you should be fine.

you can use diy wiping varnish
i use it a bit and find it works real good - danish tends to be soft and gets marks on it easy - you really need to use a good polishing wax on top like gillies carnauba

plenty of wiping varnish recipes on the interwebz
i go for a low cost low toxicity option if available
poly plus turps works pretty good fro me - not non toxic but better for my liungs than lacquer and thinners

wiping varnish
varnish lacquer polyurethane whatever plus heaps of thinning agent
wipe it on give a minute then wipe off or just leave it and buff between coats
minwax has nasty stuff in it i think from memory - i had a can that went to jelly after a while on the shelf and never used it again
