hi all
My son (and also student - Yes i am his wood teacher ) is making an acoustic for his HSC project. We both hope to sek some advice as we go along - so its nice to b here

Does anyone have any plans or hints for a homemade bending iron? We are doing the majority of bend with a 'fox jig' but the cutaway will need an iron.

Any help would be great.

Hi Scott,

There are plenty of bending iron plans on the net, chances are you'll need to refine the bend on the sides after bending in the fox jig anyway. I built mine from a piece of pipe (Bunnings), a bit of 3/4" ply and an el-cheapo heatgun from Supercheap. I included a heat sensor and controller which I also use in my fox jig but you can get away without it. You can see in the pic that I had to add a heat deflector in front of the hot air gun with a bit of sheet ally to prevent the plastic front on the gun from melting. I tried a butane torch as the heat source first but never felt comfortable with the naked flame in the shop so switched to the heat gun method.

I always find building the jigs is half the fun!!
