Blackwood 018 Acoustic
Hi there,
This guitar is for my son who is a working musician. I sent it off with him a few weeks back and it has been used on twenty gigs. I said, tongue in cheek, give it a flogging and play it in a bit. It has a K&K mini western pickup system fitted and he liked the fact that the whole guitar is very responsive when plugged into the PA so it has been subjected to some Tommy Emanual tapping. He brought it back to me all sheepish last week and said there is a noise that sounds like a brace has lifted. I knew this guitar was going to be well played so I built it as strong as possible and I thought surely a brace hasn't lifted. Turned out the fingerboard is vibrating on the top when he taps it. Phewwww!!!! I will get him to gig it for another twenty gigs and once we are both happy with the setup I will spot glue the fingerboard down. Happy ending! fix
The guitar is all Blackwood and I must say it sounds damn good. I must thank Bob Connor for picking out a suitable top for me. I have heard other guitars with hardwood tops and they seemed tight sounding and a bit thin to me. This one surprised me and sounded good from the start so I am very pleased. There will be a mp3 of the guitar in the near future.
Top back and sides: Blackwood from Bob Connor
Appointments: Indian Rosewood from Shane at High Mountain Tonewoods
Neck: NGR from Micheal Connor
Machine Heads: Black Schallers
Pickup: K&K Mini Western System
Here are a few pictures for you all and thanks for looking.
Cheers
Alan

You know, I've seen many instruments on this forum and haven't commented for one reason or another however I must say, from an workmanship perspective, that is a stunning piece of work. Greatly admired, your son is very lucky.

Thank you Scott, Dayvo and Jef for your kind comments.
Thanks Bob for your comments too.
Sorry if I have offended you Bob as I was not deliberately trying to promote any particular wood vending business. The wood I use for my projects comes from many different venders.
Cheers

Absolutely love that Alan.
The simplicity of the headstock shape & the lack of obvious bindings make it perfect!
Makes me want to try my hand at an acoustic one day.

Thanks Fletch and Roscoe for your kind thoughts. It is a very rewarding hobby and I wished I had started years ago. Still, years ago there where kids, no spare time, full time job and no spare cash. Kids are on there own now and the job is part time and I find there is a little spare cash also.
Thank you for looking
Cheers

Alan, you mentioned in your archtop build that you used the Benedetto book as a reference. I'm thinking of trying my hand at building an archtop too.
Do you think the book is enough or do you recommend I get his DVD set too ?
Cheers

G'day Fletch,
I'd go for the book with dvds and Stew Mac have it for about $150. The dvd shows lots of carving techniques and how to make specialised jigs which will help you achieve some tricky stages of your build. I can give you a link to 250 pics of my recent archie build. I have started another Archie myself using Queensland Kauri and I will be starting the carve very soon. The rims are all finished as is the neck blank. You can ask me questions anytime too.
Cheers

G'day Bill,
These are the first pictures posted on the forum of this one. It has been on the workbench for over a year as it had a few issues during the build. All sorted!
Thank s for your comments.
Cheers
Alan
