Glen, I realise that there are issues with accuracy on filing the rounded pieces, that is part of the attraction of having a go.

I would really like to have the Gifkins jig, but I seem to be always picking up little bits and pieces to do certain jobs rather than lashing out for what is a hobby requirement. Last Saturday I picked up a brand new scrolling saw for $49.00 at Aldi. This was a rare impulse purchase but the price was so good I plonked the money down and stagggered out with it figuring out how I was going to get it home on the back of a motorbike.

Anyway as a hobby, I consider this to be a part of the learning curve, I'm sure that every time I make a mistake I'll learn something quite valuable. Time restraints will ensure that it will be a reasonable time before I manage to acquire all of the bits and pieces needed to start, then I somehow have to organise manufacturing the tool and hope it works.

If you want to have a go at making it yourself, good on you say I.

However, I reckon by the time you've bought all the bits and pieces, it won't be much cheaper than a bought Taiwanese cheapie.

I'd also be suprised if it's as acurate .

After all, their combs are cut on a CNC machine. You aren't ever going to match that accuracy.

The most important thing though is that you have fun with it.

    Cheers

    Hi Craig

What is the name of your 1/2 blind jig? How much are they & are they available in WA do you know?

I am just finishing a sofa end table which has a drawer which, by the plan, needs this joint on the drawer front. Having no idea how to do this by hand I guess I will need to buy a jig, but I hope I can get more use from it than just one project.

Will this jig also do full dovetails or is a separate jig required for this. Is there a reasonable priced jig that will do both?

    Thanks

    Neil.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonay in one hand - Strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming - "WOO WOO...What a ride"

    Neil,

Sorry, I just realised that I didn't reply to your question. How rude of me

I actually bought a Jet jig at the Sydney show a couple of years ago. It was around a hundred bucks.

CarbatecWA or Timbecon will have something the same, it'll just be painted a different colour

No you can't do through d/t's with them only half blind.

To be honest, I don't really like the look of the joints they produce. They look to "machine made" for mine.

I really think that the Leigh Jig is the only d/t jig worth having but they are way to expensive for me, although they do have a cheaper version on the market now. It's still around $400 though.

    Cheers

Sean, Ive gotten almost all of the bits in sitting in a box and am trying to fit in time to start the project.

The other slight problem is that I'm working on getting a new garage, which is where my workshop is. This entails total removal of the asbestos ridden fibro cement job and a brick wall on the boundary, which will enlarge the width of the garage by 1.2m thereby allowing me to put in a new workbench.

Currently, I'm just starting to box up bucket loads of tools and assorted bits and pieces to empty the garage out prior to demolition.

I envisage a start in Spring, or, at the latest, early summer.

    I haven't forgotten.

    Mick.

It shouldn't be too hard to make an accurate comb.
Make a router template jig of 1 slot and 1 roundnose. and just move it along 1 at a time till they are all done.
I reckon you could use 2 - 3mm aluminimum for the comb if you roughed it out with a jigsaw or bandsaw so that the router bit just takes a very fine cut to give the accuracy.

Wear eye protection if routing aluminimum.

SWMBO bought me one of those 1/2 blind jigs a few weeks back, $49, and I trialed it yesterday for the first time, results........let us just say that the steel of the jig is actually quite soft and it appears I am also 1/2 blind, cause I didn't notice until afterwards
