Rose Alder
I am researching Drouyn drums after finally finding a kit in good condition. Don Sleishman tells me the drums are made from Rose Alder. I've researched the timber, but I'm asking if anyone here can help further with any information. Why would they use Rose Alder? Was it popular in the 1960's? I understand they also used Queensland maple; but I'm guessing that even then it was expensive. Are there any other instances of Rose Alder being used in a musical context? Is it hard to make into ply and then shape - and keep in shape - without reinforcing rings? If it's now heritage listed; why is it not farmed like Qld maple? Sorry for the barrage, but even one answer would really help. Thanks very much, pk

Rose Alder , pink and grey, about the same hardness as Qld Maple ? 1/2 m3 came my way once. Lovely timber. I don't know about the tap tone but it is light enough for lutherie.
Cheers, Bill
