    Default Blast Gates DIY

I was reading somewhere about making your own blast gates but I cannot find it.
Anyone knows where it is, please?

What size are you looking at? Here is a link to my 150 mm gates.

The detail in that post shows them being made from 150 mm PVC adapters and PVC plate using a metal working lathe and a metal working mill, but I have since made some from MDF using just a jigsaw and a wood working lathe.

One advantage they have over most conventional gates is that they are female and not male fitting so they do not take up space inside ducting. The other thing is to make them as smooth and lip free as possible.

    Thank you Bob.
Not much chance of getting near a metal workshop or a lathe.
We were thinking of fixing 100 PVC pipe to the walls with Y-fittings for the hoses but without having to change hoses every time we change machines, we definitely need some blastgates.
I think we can adapt your design.

Yeah I reckon you can use a drill and small jigsaw to cut out the holes on some MDF.

When I made mine, I made them similar to this plan which is linked to Bill Pentz's site-

Building a Dust Collection Blast Gate

I used MDF and 1/4" ply, they work quite well.

That is basically what I did except my gates use a pvc coupling as their two end pieces.

If pipe is used then one side can plug straight into a Y coupling which is where blast gates are commonly used but then the other side then requires a coupling.

What would be better would be to make one end using half a coupling and the other end out of pipe.

I need to make two more gates for my system and that is what I will use for these.

Try this, a rocking blast gate that can be mounted overhead and operated. If I actually get the pic to upload it will be a
miracle never equalled in the history of this forum....

I'm trying to think of the benefits of a rocking gate, . . . a bit easier to operate maybe ?
OTOH - about double the amount of material would be required to make the gate and a bit more "fitting" would be required

Can be remotely mounted and operated without additional mechanism other than two cords, I thought that was obvious.

Not really. vertically mounted conventional gates can be pulled open and pushed closed remotely just as easily with just one stick or rod plus there are no complex shapes or curves to be cut.

Sorry that previous post did sound rather "brusque".

On reflection, having had to run around a shed opening and closing gates many times I can see a quick tug on acord being faster than using a stick.

The gate looks quite good Chris.
