Default Cabot's water based clear over Wattyl traditional stain

Are there any problems using Cabothane water based polyurethane over Wattyl traditional stain? Any special precautions that need to be taken? I prefer the Wattyl stain over Cabot's interior stain (water based) for a number of reasons. 1) The Wattyl causes almost no raised grain (to my astonishment). By comparison the Cabot's noticeably raises the grain. 2) The Wattyl colour (contemporary maple) is much more to my liking than the Cabot's maple which is yellowish. The stain will be applied to marine ply which has a nice pinkish natural shade that the Cabot's totally hides. 3) The Wattyl brings out the grain better (without raising it). I am only uncertain if using a water based clear over an oil based stain is a no-no. The clear will be applied by HVLP spray gun as the area is large and I want a flawless finish if possible. I have a spray booth set up in the garage ready to go.

On the tin of traditional stain you will notice that it stipulates that you can clear coat with Wattyl Water-based estapol. My best guess would be that the Cabothane will be fine. Still try it out on a pice of scrap first to be sure.
Also, on the stains, an oil based one should nt rais the grain where a water based one will. There are allways exeptions though.
    Hope this helps.

Try the Cabots clear on a small test piece. Let it dry for a couple of days then put some sticky tape on the clear. Rip the tape off. It the tape comes off leaving the clear stuck to the stain you should be ok.
