Default Plane Blades and Chisels ( A progress report )

    Hi All,

Things are getting back to normal ( at last ) and grinding is progressing nicely. Helmut is coming up in a few weeks to help with packing and postage.

Here are a couple of short video's

Josh is spending time working steadily through the finishing stages of the plane blades...

A thread in the Metal work section describes how the 25 degree mag transfer block was made. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/ma...-block-160111/

Thanks to everyone for being so patient.. it's a marathon.. and it's not finished yet..

    Regards
    Ray

Looking impressive, good to see. Thanks for the vids and the update.

An afterthought. When was the video taken, how recent is it?

    Hi All,

Just continuing on from the previous post,

As the blades come off the surface grinder, there is the familiar wire edge, and we are taking that off with a few swipes on a Shapton 5000.

I'd expect that some might want to go further with polishing and flattening the back, but as supplied it will pop hairs off your arm.

The blade edges are then dipped in a Hot Melt Strippable Protective Coating

If nothing goes wrong, all the plane blades will be finished this week. ( no promises.. )

    Regards
    Ray

    PS..
An afterthought. When was the video taken, how recent is it?

Sorry Ray, I missed that question, video was taken the same day as it was posted.

To Ray , Helmut and Josh

Marathon is right. There sure is a lot for you to do. Will that shiny mirror like finish that we saw on the plane blades be on the firmer chisels too? Boy the small set of chisels you are doing for me will certainly be beautiful heirloom to be handed down to who ever is around when I am gone.

Thanks you all so very much for the care and attention you are displaying with this huge group order.
Now I just can't wait for them to arrive. I need now to gather some really good timber to make the handles.
All the best to you fellas and thanks again
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

    Default Some extra love

    Hi all,
(Josh here; thought i should finally join the forum so that I can post some updates of the group order without having to bother RayG about them)

Well the plane blades are almost finished only a dozen or so to go!
The only remaining blades are the ones that require that extra special bit of attention to put right.
    Attached bellow are two typical examples.First one is a 6mm x 200mm x 50mm Blade that had a 0.13mm twist.
    Second one is a 6mm x 200mm x 50mm Blade that had a 0.11mm Bow.
It is very time consuming (all day to just finish of 6 blades) but it is worth it to have flat backs.

PS.chambezio,We will do our best and if nothing else they will as flat as possible on the chisel backs to make that initial honing as painless as it is possible to be with cryogenic M2.

PPS. I just put one of the ground blades (the "skin" needs to be removed as the there is a layer of different steel after heat treatment) on the hardness tester and it pulled a just a little more than our 64.8HRC Wilson's Standard Calibration disk. so I would say that the blade is 65±0.5HRC which would explain why my shaptons are only just adequate for the job of sharpening the grinding burr off the bevel.

I'm sure you will be very welcome on the forum and I hope that you continue to participate even after the blades and chisels are done and dusted.

It is good to see some of the problems with which you have to contend.

    Welcome Josh.

Brobdingnagian post shows a level of care that we have never gotten from any of the commercial mobs. As I have said before Brobdingnagian and RayG are going way beyond the call of duty, for the love of perfection in their work. While delays have been frustrating the end product will exceed all your expectations and will be superior to anything done in the past.

    Plane Blades are almost done.

NOTICE:The people that have ordered plane blades should send an updated/current delivery address to Thumbsucker/RayG/Brobdingnagian via PM or email.

NOTICE:The people that have ordered skew blades will not have a bevel ground unless you can tell me which way you would like it ground. (a picture would be best to avoid confusion)

Your rivin' knife is sitting here somewhere nicely ground and oiled just exactly where is another question :S, I think we got a little caught out by the Austrian adventure. Shall we post it off for you or should we wait for your company? Your always welcome by the way.
