Well they look good to me four or six string? What is the neck timbers, pine? I assume you are installing a few pickups.

Thanks, for the reply, no , no pick-ups the Guitars are for my 6&4 year old, my grand children, so will be fairly standard, I am making them 3 string and no frets.

The necks are a lamination of Pine & Merabu on 1 and Pine & Karrai on the other.

I do have to make a 4 string BASS for my son, and this will have a pick-up, I am just starting to think about the design, again at this stage it may be fret-less as well, I saw a video of 1 that was built with an extra long neck , and it sounded great, and as the son is 205cm tall the longer neck will not be an issue,.

Where did you get the cigar boxes from or did you make your own.
If you made your own, what did you use?

    HI Cliff,

I made my own boxes, they are available on E-Bay I think.

Mine were made from Pepperwood, that was given to me by a friend, the Bass i am making will have silky oak sides and ends, with hardwoo face & back, possibly New Guinea Rose wood, the neck is Karrie Pine & New Guinea Rose wood laminated , well that's the plan .

I'm thinking about turning mine. IE: turning a lidded box & then putting a neck on it.

    Cliff ,

Have you looked at cigar box nation, and at cigarbox images on Google??

there are some very good ideas on both.

I have just cut the timber for the bass, sides are silky oak the face and back are new guinea rose wood & beech inserts

Here are a few both cigar boxes and self made boxes.

Self made ones are from solid timber (whatever you have around) but for the tops and backs I use either 3mm ply veneered,
or 1/4 sawn Western Red Cedar sometimes I leave it plain or other times I veneer them, mostly for looks but it gives a deeper sound as well.

Another Idea is to use hubcaps. This HQ Holden one is for one of our Diggers currently serving overseas.

Great to see other CBG Builders.

    Cheers

    Steve

    Thanks Jeff,

I'm sure yours will, the great thing about CBG's is

Rule #1. There are no rules. So just go for it.

Other thing is the excitement of hearing for the first time because you have no idea what it's going to sound like until you string it up.

    Cheers

thanks, Steve, The guitars for the Grand children are being clear coated to-day by a friend(owns a furniture workshop), and when finished I will post some more pic's.

The 1 for my son, I will post Pic's as I can on the build, it should look awesome, when finished.

I found a good source for CBG builds here.

Very cheap prices for real tuners, pre-cut frett wires, bridge saddles & nuts, strings, all sorts of hardware & electronics.

Musical Instruments, Musical Instruments Store - SuntekStore

The only 'gotchya' I have struck so far is that some of the tuners, (gear heads) don't have the little screws with them & finding small screws to match is a pain so watch out before you buy, make sure the ones you pick have the screws.

Are you fretting or leaving them fret-less for slide playing. If fretting what size scale are you using (measured from the Nut to the Bridge)
I have an easy way of laying out fret positions instead of the tedious measuring. If you get stuck let me know the scales and i'll send you the layout.

I found some printable layouts on the net but I wasn't sure how good they would be when printed on a different printer.
