    Question Lighting

Have read Fletty's thread a couple of times.

I want to put up a similar setup that I can position where and when needed over my various machines.

Tried to find something similar but no success so far so I have a couple of questions.

!. What is better, soft or bright white light?

2.What wattage is sufficient or needed?

3.What about brightness/ candlepower/ lumens (sp.)? How many?

    4. Has anyone tried the Led tubes to replace their Fluro tubes and if so how good are they?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Cheers,artme.

Thanks to my son who supplied a fluro dual tube and Fletty for mounting it I have a bright end of the garage.

At the lathe I use a new style Daylight lamp, globe blew 2 weeks ago when hit by flying wood. Put in the interum an old 60W globe and it was like trying to work with a candle

I have been in many sheds and daylight is best the more the better.
I personally haven't seen Fletty's light yet looks good and yes I think I'd like one too. One day maybe lotto and my own shed again no rental. Must buy ticket first

I bought some LED strip lighting last year for teh shed in 2010. The supplier said a 5W strip would be the same as standard fluoro tube but when I tested it out with a light meter I found that two 5W LED strips would be needed to match standard fluoro tube. Then I find out that the LED tubes have 9W of LEDs in it them.

I have literally just got home from helping another (but non-forum !) woodworker install the same light as mine in his garage workshop! He put 4 hooks into the ceiling, hung the light from short lengths of chain and plugged the panel into the powerpoint that powers the tilta-door. Even though bright sunshine was streaming through the open door and reflecting off the light colour floor the LED panel made a big difference to the area underneath it and certainly showed that it was daylight balanced because it didnt appear yellow in the face of heatwave sunshine. He has his machines and bench on wheels so that, when the car is taken out, he wheels his bench under the light.
He put me on to the 600mm square LED panel in the first place and it seems to come up on ZAZZ every few months. At less than $100 from ZAZZ it a good deal.

Bob, I presume you mean a 4'/40 watt fluoro? Just goes to show how remarkably efficient LEDs are...444% of the efficiency of a fluoro, and I imagine they last a good deal longer as well, and without the need for a starter and the annoying flicker at startup (which chews up power). As far as I know they are continuous spectrum aren't they?

Fletty, a good way to check the daylight balance of them would be to set a digital camera to the Daylight setting, and take a pic. I reckon it'll probably be very, very close to spot on.

What I'd like to see is an LED that has the same warmth as incandescent, for use in the house (and I mean the same, not vaguely similar like the warm compact fluoros).

    Cheers

Ok, so only a miserable 400% of the efficiency.
