Workshop updates 2013
Well guys it has been well over a year but my lathe workbench is almost complete. I have made all the drawer faces and some custom tool holders for my lathe tools. I couldn't figure out how to post in my original thread. It said to click a box but I couldn't find it. Original thread. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f245/w...2012-a-146616/
Drawer false fronts are BB ply and Hard maple edging.
First coat of Dark Walnut Stain
Second coat of stain
Was going to make custom tool holders for my lathe chisels and realized I could just take the lids off of the boxes they came in and flock them and they would be perfect.
Put on a coat of shellac to seal them
Hunter green flocking.
Made a tray to go in the back of the drawer.

Coat of shellac
Flocked
2 coats of poly on the drawer fronts
Drawer fronts installed finally!
Cleaned up the South wall.
It will be so nice to look across my workbench and see the lathe bench finished. And the saw horsed are clear and stacked!
Thanks for looking.

OMG ..... ya'know .. you 'wood' guys ... Just as much pride in the tools as the product you make with them.
Suddenly I feel inadequate. My 'benches' are angle iron and MDF.
sigh ... sigh ... sigh ...
Great job Bret !!

What a brilliant idea and use of the boxes which tools come in. The cut out also good but my thoughts is cram as much in as possible......to many tools me thinks.

Bret I'm sorry but its just too neat!!!
You have shamed a lot us......and you know what that means......with the gauntlet thrown down.....we now have to try/do better.
Seriously you have done a great job any one would be impressed by your attention to detail
And the best part will be when you are turning a job and all the necessary gear is right at your finger tips. What price for convenience???Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

Thank you guys for all the kind comments. I new the turners would like it.
Rod I don't want to burst your bubble but all the timber for this project I got for free from work. It was being thrown out. The solid 1 1/2" thick oak top was a desk at my mom's work that was being thrown out. There was about 10 of them. My dad and I rescued 2. If we had known we would have rescued all 10.
The only money I spent on this bench was for the 10 drawer handles ($11.10) and the 10 full extension roller bearing drawer slides. Which I got online. All of them for around $70 shipped. The Lathe was my grandpas, and almost all the tools in the drawers my dad gave me for Xmas.
Now that the bench is finished I have a considerably itch to get on the lathe and turn something. Possibly some wheels and tires for my next scratchbuilt scale model.

There is something about being able to give new life to things that would otherwise be known as "junk". I like to recycle where I can. With our income coming from the government (pension) its always good to make something that costs little. I think too you become more attached to what you make when it has been recycled. Well that's the way I look at it.
Knowing your sources doesn't diminish the great result!!!Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

That is impressive bit of work. I just picked up a lathe recently and still haven't got around to setting it up as of yet. Your workbench for the lathe is so good I might have to implement them as well.
Great work.

Great work Bret. Some people complain about neat workshops, but it is just the way I like them. Love your updates.
