    I know this one!
its a bath where the patient is immersed. Sound waves create vibrations that are sent thru the water. Creates vibrations breaking up kidney stones small enough (hopefully) to pass them. Removes need for surgery.

    Pac Man has nailed it

These days laser is preferred by urologists to remove kidney stones.

I'm far too late however it's "extra-corporeal shock wave lithotripsy" or "ESWL" for short.

Blasts the stones into pieces as painful as childbirth to pass.

Hope nobody has to go through it.

    Exclamation

Good grief!! What a knowledgeable bunch we are!!

I often refer to the fora as the house of knowledge and this is
    another case of QED!

Actually Lithotripsy is not confined to kidney stones.LOML has
to have it performed on her left shoulder due to calcification of
the tendon. The calcification is the result of a past injury.

Normally the calcification it removed with a syringe. It is broken
into small pieces that are sucked into the syringe and disposed
off.A cortisone injection is then given to delay or prevent a
recurrence. This is not always effective

After four treatments LOML has to have Lithotripsy . It will be a
course of at least three blasts spread over about 2-3 weeks.
