Default Are Men's Sheds woodworking only?

I have a mate who is a retired metal working engineer, (likes to call himself an inventor), who asked me this afternoon if Men's Sheds were purely for woodworkers.

I told him that I thought they were, but didn't know for sure, not having had any Men's Shed experience. I promised that I'd follow up and let him know. He's in the Sydney area, (Taren Point).

Any info on this is much appreciated, so I can ring and let him know.

Thanks for that Ray. It seems that his local one is in Penshurst, so I'll contact them for more details. He's 85 and sick of doing nothing, so this might be just the thing for him, to keep his mind occupied.

My nearest shed (Margate - which I've still to visit ) has a couple of nice metal lathes and a mill. There's also a couple of welders.

I'm sure it depends on the funding available and what the local interest is.

Good to know that they're not all purely woodworking.

Ray, I'm not sure if he's interested in scale modelling - his eyes are very bad, but I'll mention it anyway. (He does like the 1:12 '28 Ford Roadster that I gave him for his 85th, so I could be wrong.)

It seems that his local one at Penshurst is pretty new and mainly for woodwork, leatherwork, computer skills etc, but there's another not far way in Engledine, the Bosco Men's Shed, so I'll check it out. All others are a bit far for him to get to easily. His wife has to drive him now since they took his license last year.

He does have a fully equipped workshop under his house, but lacks inspiration now and also likes a good yack, so a Men's Shed would be just the ticket, I reckon.

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

the local shed I'm involved with might look as though it's about woodwork, but in reality it's a place for old blokes (and those not so old, like me ) to conregate and and talk and socialise. Actually building anything is very much a secondary activity. If the local Penshurst shed is pretty new it probably hasn't met a metal worker so would likely welcome one with open arms.

equipment wise, it's up to your old mate, but it's likely the Penshurst shed will be more than happy to be the "custodians" of his metal working shop

Thanks Ian. I'll give Jack a ring tomorrow and pass on everything that I've learned tonight, along with contact details. He likes to socialise and is feeling cut off these days, so I suspect that he will become a member of his local shed. I'm sure there will be plenty of call for bits and pieces of metalworking that will keep him busy, especially if there's any amount of designing involved.
Before I stopped working, we used to work together, with him designing/building the mechanical stuff and me doing the electronics to make everything move. He's still sharp as a tack and would like to be useful, plus as mentioned earlier, he loves a chat, so I'm sure he'll fit right in.

Thanks everyone for the replies and for putting me on the right track. It's much appreciated. Until now I knew virtually nothing about Men's Sheds except that they do woodworking.

I was planning to join, Ray, when they were close, but now they've moved miles away and I can't easily get there. I'd need to take a taxi at almost $20 each way and the budget doesn't stretch that far.

    20 bucks is only a 3km trip, isn't it???
You could ride that on the pushy Steve.

I have heard of a Men's Shed that has a small mini buss which does pick up and drop off as it seems many are on either restricted license or none at all.

More like 4 to 5 miles each way. (I'm guessing at $20 each way - might be a bit more.)
This is a bit of a sore point at the moment. I can't pedal that far due to my lungs, and the (electric) bike's battery has come to the end of it's life after 3 years.
The supplier that I bought the bike from has closed down and I can't find a replacement battery anywhere. A bit of a PITA. It's a Lithium-ion 36V 10Ah. If I pedal as much as possible, I can still just get into town and back before the battery goes flat, if I fully charge it immediately before leaving. That trip's 2 miles each way.
I'm planning to pack the battery case with 3 x 12V 8Ah lead acid batteries but am having trouble finding some in the right shape/size to fit. I might have to settle for 7Ah batts yet, but want as much range as possible.
It's a bit tricky to fit batteries anywhere but in the original case, due to the bike's layout.
It's got me feeling like a real hermit. One way or the other, I've got to sort it out real soon, because I can't pedal more than a couple of hundred metres now.

    The bike:

There might be a light at the end of the tunnel.

I think I'll ring them and see if I'm that lucky. Being in a relatively small area, I might be out of luck, but it's worth following up on. Thanks for planting the thought, Ray.
As mentioned, I was all set to join when they up and moved on me.

    Its worth ringing Steve,
We have few members that just get a lift with other members as they can't/don't drive.
You may have someone around the corner that can take you down a couple of times a week.

What size it the battery you need, we can all have a look around. I know one of the battery world guys, he may be able to source what you need.

    Peter
