I've got three Kings and they're all marked with the grit. I've got an 800, a 1200 and a 4000. According to my Timbecon catalogue, they do a 6000 and an 8000 as well. Couldn't say if these are the only ones in the range.

Mathew,
From memory mine also indicate the grade. I looked up the MIK website and the Kings they advertise show the grit on their website.- Wood Borer

I've just picked up an 8000, and it is marked as such.

I bought a 6000 stone last month. It cost me $45.
An 8000 would have been better but it was $130. Just couldn't see that it was worth 3 times as much as the 6000.
It appears that from the 6000 to get a little bit finner costs a great deal more.
eg.
6,000 about $45
8,000 about $130
10,000 about $150
30,000 about $600.

The Japanese tag on the packaging for my 6000 King says S3, so S3 and 6000 must be equivalent.

As regards price, the 8000 came from Lee Valley and was US$39.75 for the King 8000 gold stone. I will be over there in June and intend to bring back an 8000 and 4000. After reading the posts on water stones on the forum I finally decided to leave the carborundum and oil stones on the shelf and do the final hone on an 8000, the mirror finish and razor sharp edge has me sold and they can stay on the shelf once the others arrive to match with the gold stone.
