Foden steam traction engine.

The grandstand at the Geelong Racecourse was moved there in 1907 from the old site, a few k's away. The building was 40 metres long and weighted approx 100 tons. It was towed there on
rollers by a steam traction engine operated by a James McCoy, his great granddaughter asked me if I could make a model of it as she is compiling family history and would like it finished later in the year for a family reunion. All this was recorded in the Geelong Advertiser , but is too much to put here. If anyone would like the item PM me and I will email it to you.
Attached are a few photos of the model under way, finished length approx 400 mm, a scale of 14 to 1. John.

G'Day John,
I got to sit in on this one.
When at R.A.N.A.T.E. at H.M.A.S. Nirimba in 1972, the steam club started a restoration on a Foden and it became a R.A.N. icon during the 1970's and 1980's...
I've attached some old photos from a couple of the blokes in our mob.

If you were making a model of the Cowley Traction Engine you would find the wheels easier to make as they are disc wheels with the pattern painted on. (It is owned by Museum Victoria and is on display at ScienceWorks). This engine was also used to move buildings.

The Navy Foden Steam Wagon makes regular appearances at the various rallies in Victoria.

The last couple of days working out how to do the steering. A worm drive hand cut from ( Qld acacia, hard as hell ) 12 tooth gear from redgum, chain from SWMBL jewellery box.
Also go the flywheel made. regards John.

Looks like traction engine steering mechanism. You must be spending a lot of time cutting gears for them not to break.
Only those with first hand knowledge would be scratching their heads. SWMBL will need a longer chain for the jewellery box.

your doing a great job on this project some day i want to build one of those for myself i really love old steam engines 20 years ago i built a Lombard steam logging engine i have some pictures on a post again a superb job
