Torn Ryoba - is repair possible?
Hi all,
I was today ripping down rather hard piece of red box gum when it caught and buckled back.
It tore the fine cutting side of my Ishi-atama 295mm Ryoba. The tear is between two teeth and extends about 3cm at about 45 degrees, 10cm from the end. There is no gap and the tear is clean. It's fits back together very neatly.
It's not a particularly valuable blade, but it's a bummer as it's still very sharp despite extensive use. I really love my Japanese saws.
Is it possible to just solder it, or braze it, then sand it carefully smooth?
Does one repair damage like this, or just give up and buy another?
Thanks for your wisdom.
Ev.

Give up and buy another. Heat distortion and other temperature related effects would be a nightmare in such thin steel.
If you happen to own a TIG welder you could try gently tigging it back together, but a better option might be repurposing it as a smaller sawblade by grinding off the smaller bit and re-doing the handle. (you could even have a go at turning the smaller bit into a blade for a multitool).
(I broke one of my Japanese saws in a similar tearing accident)

When I was learning how to saw Japanese with a ryoba, I also tore out part of one side; but I continued to use the other side as well as the abbreviated torn side until it was totally wrecked. It gradually self destructed, but allowed me to take my time choosing another blade.

You know, it's a terrible thing when you get told what one doesn't want to hear
Another will be on its way from toolsfromjapan...I might give it a go with CA glue! And if that doesn't work, some solder.
Worst case, I'll do as Pam did, hang out and make it last

I now have a 240mm Ryoba instead of the original 295mm...
