No, I don't get time off, thank you Derek.... I have a busy fortnight of medical appointments.
In the meantime, I've done the setup on the bandsaw, cleaned out the shed and started assembling the timber & hardware for the next project.
    Cheers, crowie

I also seem to spend more time cleaning the shed than working, just finished a shelf unit for my sister

Just what it needed Pete. A great finishing touch, and well worth the wait.
    Nice job.

    Thanks Bret,

The bandsaw has had an Alex Snodglass setup including the replacement of 3 guide bearings, the purchase of a mitre for the very small ''T'' slot on the table, connection of the dust ports to a vacuum cleaner; I'm trying to get another slide for the small ''T'' slot to be able to make a sled plus trying to sort out a taller fence for ripping [the ''T'' bolts on the current fence are M5 cuphead bolts].

The next project will be an as requested ''crane''.... I have a plan from the Wood Magazine Construction Series ''Mobile Crane'',
BUT need some assistance, help and advice as to how to add a driver's cabin to the plan....
    see the attached ''pdf file''...

Would appreciate all and any ideas, sketches, etc, PLEASE!!, THANK YOU..

    Cheers, Peter

G'day Pete. It looks like a good project.
Since the boom is usually located toward the rear of the crane, I'd just extend the base forwards enough to squeeze on a cabin. I don't think that the exact size is overly important.

Have to agree with Steve on this one as for design of the cab you have some great photo's to work from.

    Peter,

I am trying to build a mobile crane myself, and have already tackled the cabin. Please find these images as instructions. I can give measurements, but yours will need different sizes I guess. All wood is 12 mm thick.

Glue front and underside of cabin together.1.jpg

Glue roof and back of cabin together. Cut out a part to fit into the chassis (will refer to that later)2.jpg

Cut out the sides of the cabin. I used a scrollsaw.3.jpg

Glue everything together, and it should look like this.4.jpg

After a lot of sanding (I have a belt sander ) you should get this.5.jpg

Then, the chassis. As you can see my chassis has 3 layers. the top one (wide) and 2 narrower ones. I left the bottom one longer, so that it sticks into the cabin, and hits the front of the cabin. Should give enough surface to glue the cabin firmly to the chassis (underside cabin should position under the chassis. The middle part and top part of the chassis are positioned behind the cabin. 6.jpg

I hope this will help you, please ask if things are unclear.

PS: You should really check LTM mobile cranes. If you click on a crane and choose downloads, you can download a technical sheet of every crane. They have side and top views including measurements in metric and non-metric dimensions (seperate downloads, there is a button somewhere on the page to choose) I choose the scale I wanted, copied the side view to the right size, and started working. This is a prototype, I already have made 4 different booms to get everything working like I want. When I will finish it I will post a WIP.

    Default Just for Crowie

I went to have a look at a Hot Rod show nearby today and saw a vehicle that I didn't even know existed until this build. I took a couple of photos that I thought Crowie might like.

    Thanks heaps Bob....
I found some drawings on the website link.
I have used the measurements off of one of the cranes to scale a drivers cabin for the Wood Magazine Mobile Crane which I think will work....
I've been cutting and sizing recycled timber for the project during the afternoon, in little goes as I'm a bit sore today,
but life's good and toymaking eases all the discomforts.
    Cheers, crowie

PS - Won't be anywhere near as fancy as yours looks!!!
