    G'Day "techdog",
That's a difficult one; you'll just have to spend time searching the internet..
I have purchased a good book from Amazon...used paperback copies are quite inexpensive.

I hope that's of some help my "canuck" woodworking friend.
    Cheers, crowie

I'm not sure where I got this from but maybe its along the lines of what you want.

I knew I'd seen some plans somewhere, so just did a quick search and found a couple, a 'Wiggly Worm' which looks pretty good and a 'Smiley Inchworm', AR331 and AR123 respectively. You need to scroll about half-way down the page.
    Unfortunately, these plans aren't cheap.

    Skills Plans Page

After a bit more looking, there's also a few others lower down the page, a Grasshopper, a 'Hoppy Horse' and a 'Bobbing Head Push Duck' that all qualify as 'animated', I think.

The Wiggly Worm's my favourite. You can also buy a 'Trim Pack' for this one, that includes wheels, pegs, eyes, cams and back stacks.

    Have fun.

Edit: I can't get a direct link to the toy plans page to work. From the link I posted above, click on 'U-Build Woodworking Plans', then 'Children's Toys' on the following page to take you to the right place.

I just realised that you actually wanted free plans. These don't qualify. Sorry 'bout that.
Still, I'll leave this post as-is for the benefit of others. Someone might find it useful.

G'Day & Welcome "to the Great South Land" & to a top forum "EssexBoy".
There are quite a few members from UK on the forum as well as across the rest of the world..
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [work in progress] photos with build notes.
    Enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork.
Cheers from On Top DownUnder, crowie

Thanks for the photo of that old looking grasshopper......
Hoping to see some of your handiwork soon........
