Awl for one & one for Awl
I though this section of the forum was a bit neglected so I'd add a post.
Decided to get a little twisted and make some birdcage awls.

The profile on he larger one is slightly different and I think is my preferred look.

All parts are custom made to my own design.

The little brass mallet was my first tool, followed by the awl, and saw. The Marking gauge was a nice gift from a fellow forum member.
The timber it's sitting on is future saw handles and next on the list of tools to attempt will be making a dovetail plane.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

That was exactly the intention, to promote a screwing motion in use for starting holes…………Well that is what the new sales and marketing pitch will now be!
I hadn't actually thought of it past the decorative, but on the single twist I guess it is suggestive of its purpose subliminally.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Mark the section where you want the twist top and bottom. Put it in some smooth jaws in a vise. Heat the section between the lines to cherry red with a torch then use a large tap wrench to turn the opposite end and get the desired amount of twist. With a square make sure it is all still straight before it cools. Of course this is all done before assembly.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

At this rate your toolbox will contain just about all home-made tools, but that's awl good!
I would never have thought of such a nice touch as the twist, myself, but I've now filed it for possible future use (when I eventually get that forge built that I've been planning for decades..).
