Well, nearing the end of this build - a bit sad about that - its been really enjoyable.
I laid the sleepers on the base board just to get the correct spacings. The track, loco and tender had to be added just to see how they looked. The boards are bolted together in the centre. Now ready to pull it apart again and secure the sleepers. After that I will place and glue the track ballast. I am using river pebbles for the ballast (think I have said that before). I will need to place an end piece at each of the centre joints to separate the ballast at the joins to allow me to dismantle and reassemble the base without damaging the ballast. This could be a bit of a tricky task. Once that is done I will secure the track and attach the rail clamps. Photos below of how it is looking.
Regards
Keith

Looking great. It looks like you need to lay some more track as driver GI is ready to steam out of the shed.
I have enjoyed watching the build and learnt a few things along the way.

You and Repliconics should start a joint venture ie: a museum with a twist 'Yester year from todays throw-away' with a WIP shop so they can see how it was done.
The person who never made a mistake never made anything

Sorry for keep throwing ideas at you Keith cant you use one of the sleepers over the centre joint to help hide it as much as possible.
Hopefully the picture below will go some way to explain

I have had a bit of a chat (Thanks Trev) and think about my next build. I loved doing the Peny-Darren facsimile. I am looking at continuing along the theme of older steam locos. I am now really thinking that the Stephenson's Rocket may get the nod although I really like the Planet but can't find much information. Locomotives are the go - probably the same size but I have to find a display area ????

I think a fun one to make would be what they based the film on of "The Tittfield Thunderbolt"

As for all the ideas I get use to them from when I built the model boats

Hi All,
Worked on securing sleepers and then placing the ballast. Made up a jig to ensure I drilled all holes in the sleepers so the will be beneath the rails and out of sight. I then made up a couple of fixtures to ensure the sleepers were all equi spaced whilst I screwed them to the base.
I partly followed Derek's suggestion. The middle sleeper is right on the join. This makes the join invisible and made it easy for me to spread the ballast. Used River Pebbles as ballast, the brown backboard makes it look like the under section is dirt if there are any small gaps. When placing the ballast and securing it with PVA glue you really only want a single layer of ballast otherwise the glue may not hold. Used 70%PVA Glue, 30% water as my glue mix. Sprayed on pebbles using an old trigger spray bottle. Learnt this technique from my earlier model train layout days.

Hi All,
I have finished the track for the locomotive and tender, I put down 5 coats of PVA / Water mix to ensure the ballast won't move. I have made it a 2 part track so it can be transported in the car. The sides of the track have been sprinkled with sieved dirt and then added a touch of green rubber (from my old HO Railway Modelling days) this simulates soil and grass on side of track. This has been adhered with PVA / Water mix. Rail clamps have been secured in position. Now back to the loco and tender for cleaning and any paint touchups. Derek suggested the 1838 Lion for my next build. I have contacted the Lion Historic Society in the UK and they have put me onto a Model shop in the UK who may have extensive plans.

Keith
