    Default Type of Borers

    Hello

Can anyone identify the type of borers in this slab of Aussie Red Cedar in photo's. There seems to be 2 different size holes. The larger holes, seen on outside of log, are shallow and only seem to be in the sapwood. Smaller holes are on inside of slab and penetrate deeper into log. Cannot find anything in holes that moves.

The sap wood of cedar is highly susceptible to borers of many kinds. The two most common are Lyctid and Anobium. The easiest way to tell the difference is to take a little of the dust from each sized hole, rub it between your finger and thumb. If smooth, like talc, it will be the former. If course and gritty it will be the later. By the look of the holes it is both.
Sap wood from cedar should not be used and this is the reason why.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks, just got some really good info online from CSIRO & Museum Victoria on these types of borers.
