Trainy toy maker
What with the great grandson wanting to make something and also seeing that there are many here that have started projects it gave me the push I needed to start another toy
Trainy toy maker, well I feel like it as I have been doing a lot of turning lately. And there is going to be some turning on this project.
Well the truth is my next project was going to be a pick up but I was going through my plans with the great grandson and he wanted this project.
So we set about clearing all the shavings and tools from the bench, every where was covered in turning shavings as I was still turning a hollow form this morning.
Found some ply left over from the rocking car build and made a start on cutting some of the bits to width and then using the chop saw to cut to their correct length.
It is going to be about 500mm long

Any ideas yet

Is it a passenger car for the train? Looks cool.

If that was sitting on my work bench I'd say I was building a saddle tank!

This is so frustrating trying to guess a build at this stage.....
A delivery van, a carriage, a spaceship, a train...who knows - CERTAINLY NOT I.....
More photos and hints please Derek...
Cheers, crowie

OK Peter as you guessed in another post it is Thomas the tank engine.
Have not done a lot to it but a couple of photo's of all the parts so far none of them glued together yet. Once I have turned the boiler, funnel, dome, pothole windows(in the cab) and wheels I will start to glue it together, will not be turning them until my new lathe arrives(well I say arrives I am going to collect from the shop Saturday).

The last couple of days have been split from the garden and the workshop
First the garden which now looks half respectable.

Then back into the workshop
Found six of these which with a little turning to tidy them up will be just great for the wheels

Then back to some work on the train the next four photo's are the glue up for the boiler assembly at least it will be ready for when I get the lathe if push comes to shove then I could always put it onto the small one. The light coloured wood is just a waste piece and will not be on the train

Love you garden Derek. It looks very cozy and inviting. Oh I like the train as well.

Thank you Brett.
Nothing doing today as I decided to go to the woodturning shop and collect the new lathe and now feel rough due to the heart problem(wife moaning saying I have done too much). So after a short rest I will spend the next couple of days removing the old lathe and installing the new one. This is good as it gives the boiler time to dry before turning.

New lathe Derek....WOW! I'd better duck around to your shed and see if the old one is worth an offer PLUS of course a stack of free lessons...
Pity you aren't just around the corner... Take it easy my friend and don't over do things, life is good so enjoy each new day... Cheers Peter

Peter if you every get to this part of the world you would be made most welcome.
Anyway the new lathe is up and running and I put the boiler onto it and got that turned along with the valve box and smoke stack.
There still needs to have some trimming but will leave that for when I start the glue up

Thank you Derek for the generous offer and I'd surely like to visit the UK & Europe in summer of course, on day, I think I'd best pass on this time as the airfare and excess baggage on the return would void the very kind offer.....plus to make things worse, I haven't any room in the shed....
Now back to the train.... It is looking great Derek.. Do you have a plan for the build or is it a scratch build project please??
Keep the photos coming and please continue to look after yourself by not over-doing things [good advice for the bloke in the mirror too....lol]..
Cheers, Peter

I know what you mean about the air fare.
The train is from a set of plans I found and are so close to Thomas the tank engine I will change a couple of small bits to suit
