    The 2 on the other side of the switch should be joined together & your hot wire to the output should go on there.

    ok. swapped poles. It worked though there is still a bit of humming which reduces a little when i touch the braid. At least I can get sound from my amp now which is great. I'll continue hunting for the source of the humming. Determined to sort it.

    an experienced luthier type would have known. Now I'm experienced I'll know. Nothing teaches like a mistake!
