Default No.3 tool and cutter grinder

At last I got around to doing something about the T & C grinder I picked up a while back. All was going well till I came to the rack gear under the table, guess what no gear. Does anyone happen to have one I can buy or one I can get a loan of to make a copy.P1010678.JPGP1010679.JPG

Default No.3 tool and cutter grinder

Almost ready to fire up, still need the gear that drives the rack and have to fabricate a few pieces, but that shouldn't take long.

I also have a resto project No.3, and can lend you the missing gear.

The bronze helical gear measures ~36mm across the tips of opposing teeth, which are all a bit furry on mine, and seem to be worn thin.
The bore is 5/8" with a 3/16" keyway which is about 1/16" deep.
    Length is 3/4".
The angle of the 16 teeth appears to be at 15 degrees.

    Default rack gear

    Thanks Jordan,
I think I can get by with what you have given me in your reply. I've done a quick calculation which suggests its 12dp( I would have expected 14dp) with a one tooth adjustment, quite standard for a lot of the Hercus apron and gearbox gears. I'll check the rack agrees with that and get back to you.

    Good one Mal.

Will you be offering to make them to sell? Emma Chisset?

    Default for sale?

    Hi Jordan,
Not at the moment, I would have to have a batch professionally hobbed ,although homemade gear is good enough for me and works quite well it is not of a quality fit to sell. A bit beyond my finances with what I've got currently in the works. Concentrating on the crosslides and tailstock quills at the moment. I was planning on doing the "O" mill stuff next because of the similarity to the lathe components.
The Hercus tool and cutter grinders don't seem to be very nurmerous and remaking the parts is probably not a viable option at this time.

    Very understandable, Mal.
I was just curious, even though my gear is still serviceable as is.
