    Default Thanks to all

Thank you to all for the wonderful help, advice with my many questions. I have finished my version of the Xylophone, not chromatically correct I am sure, makes pleasing tone and resonance, and will be beat upon by 'little hands', so I trust the little feller will be happy.
I used Spuce for the carcase, Plywood for the inside sound board and dividers[somehing to do with tone and amplification] i finished with water base poly, and Purpleheart for the Keys, finished wih equal parts of BLO, Oil base Poly, and Mineral spirts, wipe on,then and rub with a clean cloth. Here are a few pictures.

    It looks great.
Nice colour on the Purpleheart. Did you find it good to hard to work?

Scally, it is quite hard, takes to splintering when drilled and counter sinking for screws, also hard as heck to cut, but pleasing to look at in this form, could be an overpowering color on a large project

Back on the subject of what wood..for others that may be considering a build.

We are not undersupplied with viable timbers in this country...my first thaught would have been gidgie, but there are many woods that ring well when struck.

PNG rosewood was mentioned...maybe australian rosewood.....cooktown ironwood perhaps...though it is now embargoed, there may still be some surian batu arround.

Some of the denser samples of ironbark and maybe even merbau and kwila.

a lot of it depends on how narrow and pure you want the sound and how much ring...yeh and how hard you want to belt it.

    plenty of choice.

    cheers
