Default Best Drill Press Under $700

    Hi Gents,

I'm after some advice - I am looking to get a decent quality drill press. I have been doing some reading and am not 100% about the Hafco machines, as I have read some good and some bad reviews about them. I'd prefer to get a Jet but the only place I can find that sells them online is Carbatec and they only have the big one for $1579.

So.. I put it to you guys.. what is the best new quality drill press available in Sydney or delivered to Sydney for around or under $700? .. I know a good quality old used one would be ideal but have been looking for a while and looks like finding a good one can be a bit of a lottery in itself.

    Cheers.

    "Best Drill Press Under $700"

To be honest I don't think such a thing exists. Problems with run-out, very short quill travel, and so on.

Maybe try a "Wanted" in the forum marketplace?

I like the idea of being able to play with the drill press before making a decision.

You will have your thoughts/check list on what is required so best to ensure the ones you look at fill those items.

When I selected one it had three things that I wanted, square table, changeable speeds and floor mounted. I have never used it at the fastest speed but have gone to the next to slowest.

Not able to suggest one as I only ever had one so not able to compare.

I may need to spend more time on a drill press, I have a floor standing Ryobi drill press bought from bunnings and it costed like under $500. To me a drill press just drill, if the travel is too short then why not use a longer drill? Anyway I like European made machinery and the drill press in the shed is the one of only two machinery that's made in Asia . probably the least used machinery.

Because it doesn't matter how long the drill is, a short travel quill will still only move it 80mm (or whatever).

    Default Mine

I got a drill press from Carbatec a few years ago, a 3/4 hp DP4116B. They are currently listed for about $400 though when I bought it the Aussie dollar was a lot higher and I paid closer to $300.

Anyway I welded up a bit of a stand and bolted it down and It works just fine for what I do. I don't make large engineering projects but for the tables, cabinets, boxes etc. I do make it is perfect. If I had a lot more money maybe I would have spent a lot more money but it would have been wasted since at no time have I wanted for some ability that the drill press could not provide me with. I have no idea what projects you have in mind but I suspect for most weekend or casual hobby/craft workers something like this would be ideal.

Sorry but in several thousand years time some archeologist will be digging up the ruins of our society and will stumble upon this post. They will shake they head in wonder and they will write an article for whatever scientific journal that exists in the far flung future
